Newest Addition 86 CJ7
So I've done the HEI upgrade as well as installed a new painless kit. She turns over but doesnt start. I've checked the carb and she's getting gas so it must be spark. I've checked over the distributor and everything looks good. Battery is good, spark plugs are brand new, distributor and wires are brand new HEI. Hmmmm I'm running out of ideas, anyone have any suggestions? It's an 86 CJ7 with the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l in it. The computers got tossed aside when I put the painless kit in her.

might be a faulty HEI or bad wiring to it. Have you pulled a plug, grounded it and observed a spark? (be careful!) If there is spark, check timing. If no spark, check your wiring. put a volt meter on the wires going to the HEI from the harness and make sure it is getting power (Not the plug wire!).

x2 it takes fuel air and spark to run and it looks like you have crossed out the first 2, you def need power to the HEI in the run and start position on the ignition switch

I've installed the painless kit and the installation booklet had the one wire from the harness going to the HEI, there was only one other connection and that is for the tach. I'll check to make sure there is power to the HEI but I thought if I had spark at the wires the HEI would therefore have to have power going to it?

Just to test, unplug your 12V wire from your HEI, and with a meter, check to see if you have voltage while cranking the engine over, you should have 12V.. a lot of us that use the HEIs have to install a relay through the ignition circuit to get a FULL 12V to the distributor while it's cranking or there will be no fire..

K, I'll try the relay out. I'm back to work for the week but will give it a shot next weekend and let you know if it works. Thanks for the info.

Is this a correct diagram of your relay and the wiring schematics for it?

Yes it is, but check it with a meter 1st. to see what you got now.

Hey I've got the relay but it's a five plug. Two are tagged #87. Is there a particular reason for this. Do I just not use the middle (fifth)one? Here is a pic of the relay.
