To start off, Jeep has been running fine the last several months.

The last few times I started it took a couple extra cranks. As in, it would fire and sound like it was about to start, then not. So I crank a couple times and it would finally start.

Yesterday, I was going to take a ride and it would not start. It turns, gives one good vroom! and won't stay on. If I hold the key in it will half arse run but not good for it and I can't drive it holding the key :D.

Check to see if you have power to the coil with the key on.

You'll notice that the starter relay sends power to the coil during cranking. This may explain your condition.

Thanks for the info.

I put a test light on it with key on and it does not light up. So what part is the issue?

Should be the ign. switch itself or the wiring.

Id try bumping the key to the start position and seeing if you have power to the coil then. You should since thats the only time it fires.

see if you have power at the ign switch terminal that runs to the coil. If you do you can bet its the wiring. I see a resistor in the diagram; might try and find that too. If you have power at the ign switch terminal for the coil you can use a meter to check for continuity in the wire between the plug and the end at the coil. You may find a damaged terminal at the plug. Look for any evidence of it getting hot.

Ok thanks more good info. I am going to look at it tomorrow night and will hopefully figure it out. I post up what I come up with.

Just to close the thread, tested positive going into from battery and switch was receiving power. Key on and positive out to ICM tested, no power. Switch replaced and starts on a key again.

No, it was not nearly as easy as it sounds or as quick :D.

Lol but it works now so congrats

I got some help from some guys on JF and DSLYWALKER who was also moonlighting and gave some input :D. Some of those guys are crazy about electrical, in a good way . So, I figure I should post up the pics I took of the switch here as a mod asked me to pull apart to see what it could have been.

It ends up one of the contacts inside was bent, and not making contact anymore. Not sure how that happens but I assume it has to do with the key turning or the copper getting soft and catching from being old.
