I am converting my 85 CJ7 from a 350 small block back to a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l il6. I know this model had a computer. The previous owner butchered the under dash harness. The under hood harness is still pretty much intact, and I am hooking everything under hood like an 80 model. Is the ignition module gonna fry. From reading threads I think the computer is necessary for fire. Is it better to rewire inside cab or just hope for fire?

IMO you would be better off going on and doing the re-wire as close as possible to stock if that's the goal you are trying achieve. I got lucky and found one locally that wasn't in bad shape at all. I went point to point ohmming it out to make sure before I installed that at least the wires were good. That was one thing eliminated. That is where a FSM will help to identify where everything goes. People always mention "Painless Wiring", they are good but expensive. There is another company that does the same thing but at about half the cost I just can't remember the name. If I come up with it I'll pm ya' later. Best of luck.

One day I'll post pictures on my build thread of what I encountered.
