I have the not so well liked SR4 Transmission . Seems to work well except in reverse. It jerks a lot sort of like when not letting clutch out correct. In the forward gears all is well. Also when backing up it sort of makes a clicking noise. Anyone have suggestions on what it might be or where to start looking for a fix.

Thanks

Short list of things to check, motor mounts, Transmission mount, U-joints and even U-bolts. If all those are good I would suspect the clutch is starting to wear thin. Does it leak oil between engine and Transmission ?

Yes maybe 2 or 3 drops after it gets warm and pulled back in garage. Could cover drops with a 50 cent piece.

Also could the tires be causing it. They are 33's. Going to change them out soon but they are very good tread. PO had put them on. I would like to go back to original size.

It's possible that your rear main seal is leaking and getting oil on the clutch plate and causing some chatter. The AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l is notorious for the valve cover to leak and it will also drip at about the same place making you think the main seal is bad. Start with the valve cover, much cheaper and alot less work ;). No matter what the problem truly is, the bigger tires will exacerbate it.

Valve cover gasket has been replaced and not leaking oil anywhere I can see. Except the few drops of Transmission fluid off the front of Transmission . Transmission works great in 1 through 4 . Just reverse is jumpy. Has me stumped...

Not sure about your gearing with the "4 banger", but the 33 inch tires would certainly play havoc on the clutch unless you have some fairly deep gears. :chug:

I am guessing when you say 4 banger you are referring to Transmission and not engine. It has AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l engine. I want to get rid of them and put factory size on just got to sell the tires and rims. Would like to have black rims and smaller tires

This is why we ask you to fill out your profile to avoid confusion. :) Id go back to what Hole said and check all your mounts. Oil on the clutch would probably be noticeable in the forward gears as well. Atleast it was on mine.

I know my main seal leaks a small amount, and how much of it is on the clutch is only a guess but mine always chatters in reverse and only sometimes in first.

Nope, I miss quoted, my apologies. I had thought that I had seen "4 banger" in the thread and I was in fact saying 4 cylinder engine! Sorry :chug:
