I need some help / advice here... I have my old tank out and the new one is positioned under the Jeep, but when I start to raise it up and hook up the filler hoses I have a problem. The little nozzle has a slight bend to it, just as the original did, but the bend on the new tank puts it too close to the nozzle for the main filler and so the main filler hose won't go on because the angle it would need is too much for it to be able to bend to.

I need to either bend that small nozzle or cut good couple inches off, thereby making it too short for the hose to attach to.

Should I just do that and put a couple in there and use heater hose because it's so large an ID hose?

first things , check the size of that hose, I find it difficult to believe that you can replace it with a heater hose. I say this for both size and reaction to long term contact with gasoline.

Let me rephrase that, you have a 77 which makes it practically impossible to get replacements for the large hose.

Can you do some pictures of the area the problem is in I may have an opinion or two. Do you have a new steel or polly tank??

Here... It's the small nozzle I was pondering using heater hose on... Instead of bending down, it should bend toward the rear...

you are right, looks like someone dropped it.

If you can't or don't want to return it I would try bending the vent tube. I would try to find a bending spring to slide over the tube to spread as much force away from the joint, is that welded or soldered or brazed?? the bending spring will keep the tube from folding and denting in case it is something requiring a dead blow hammer.

If some one else bent it you should be able to bend it back.:D

It appears brazed in there... I think someone just did it wrong. The bend it should have, but it's rotated counter-clockwise about 15 degrees.

Can I just cut it off and use heater hose to make up the difference? There's not that much fuel in that small line ever anyway is there?

See if you can find some fuel line of the right size. Heater hose will deteriorate just from the vapor.

Any way to send it back??:D

You can buy a replacement hose for the vent with no problem from any of the on line vendors maybe some one local, it's the big one that is a problem. Just buy another vent hose and you can cut it and splice it any where you want. you can put the splice in the middle rather than at one end, use the steel tube you cut off to splice the two hoses.:D

I just went through something kinda like this with my 78. The PO really hacked things up, my fill nozzle was bolted to the passenger side completely rerouted. Plus the tank itself had been cut and a piece of exhaust tube welded in to connect the hose too.
I know it is a different year and setup but the vent hose is an odd size. I ended up going to Napa and buying a chunk of multi use hose. Its ugly red hose that cost me $6 for 18" but it resists gas among other chemicals so is safe to use in that area. Mine has a slight bend in it and the hose is straight but I have had no issues yet.

the replacement tank that came in my 73' doesnt work right either. The vent tube has such a sharp bend that the hose is pinched off. The tank was new when I bought the jeep but already had a leak from rubbing on the frame due to wrong fit.

Seems like a common theme.

I'm be replacing mine with a fuel cell.

Ive bent that pipe before by sticking a screw driver or extension that was almost the same size as the pipe in it and using it to bend it.. you only need a little bit of room.

Thank you so much to all of you for your kind replies... It's appreciated.

I got frustrated and lopped it off with a hack saw... I'll connect it with parts of two vent pipes until I do my tub swap.

I removed the fuel line from the fuel filter and ran it on starting fluid until it was puking gas, then reconnected it and now it starts and runs great...I'll start a new thread in drivetrain for that as I have a question.
