What kind of insurance do you guys have?
Auto insurance is regulated at the state level, so getting comparisons from people around the country is good only for conversation. So I'll start:
I live in Michigan, which is a No-Fault state. Our rates tend to be a bit higher than other states, but if you are ever really messed up in an automobile accident, you don't have to worry about your medical bills. Ever. Or bills related to your injuries. Ever. It is difficult to sue another drive, even if they are cited as 'at fault'. There is the need to prove negligence, which is difficult to do in Michigan courts.
In my 'No Fault' state, your insurance takes care of you. Whether you are 'at fault' or not.
Your collision coverage can vary, as can your deductible. Insurance companies have a maximum amount they will pay to fix a car. This is a factor of vehicle value and damage.
Carrying the minimum Michigan coverage (PL&PD) and comprehensive to cover fire/theft/glass, I paid less than $50 a month with AAA. But the vehicle was not streetable. After speaking with an agent, I won't insure it with them because they do write 'Agreed Value' policies. I have way too much $$$$ in my Jeep, and will go with Hagerty. Their policy would be $1100 a year, but I will be storing the vehicle 5-6 months, so I can drop the collision coverage when it's not being driven. That should bring me down considerably.
BTW: My wife's 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit, with 3800 miles and one payment made, was rear ended tonight by an older lady. The lady didn't want us to call the police, but experience with accidents in Michigan taught me otherwise. Cops came, the lady was determined to be 'at fault', and we got our case # for our insurance company. We can sue the 'at fault' driver's insurance company in a Mini-tort for up to $1000 to recover our deductible and other damages not covered by our insurance company.
