Hello all, I am back into the CJ seen, been gone since early 90's when I sold my 81 Scrambler, just before they got very expensive! Since then I had been playing with XJ’s and MJ’s, Just adopted a project, $700 and worth every penny, 80' CJ5 w/AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l .
I am the owner of Rush Power Systems, we built custom high amp alternators and other electrical toys and I have 25 years experience in electrical, but if you cant hook a wire to it I am lost. Which brings me to my question;

the other day at the local pick and pull I picked and pulled a steering column and booster/master cylinder from a 92 XJ, which are much more common in the bone-yards here in Utah. My plan on the booster was have my fabricator build a bracket and extend the rod, however it looks nearly identical to the rod length on my old master cylinder, which makes me think - why cant I just drill new holes and bolt the thing up to the firewall as it is in the XJ? Has anyone tried this? Seems so simple there must be something I am missing.
Thanks

Hello rushpowersystems and welcome to our site! :chug:

Your not missing anything - it's almost direct bolt in! :)

You must have manual brakes (you said you needed to drill holes). You only need a few brake line adapters and your good top go!

This is a great page on doing that swap! -->> Busted Jeep.Com! - In The Garage - YJ Brakes on a CJ

Looking forward to seeing your CJ develop!

yes manual brakes, looks like it is a different bolt pattern and that is why I would need to drill.
thanks for the link!

but then again, the link is about YJ, i am looking at using an XJ. i will try to do some test fitting today.

I'm pretty sure it's about the same thing... :) That was just a good link for reference. :)

rushpowersystems Post up your results if you do this swap.
There are tons of XJ's near me but no YJ's I'd like to do the swap
also.

BTW, you've messed up by saying you know electrical stuffs, prepare for
the questions to come in.

no worries, happy to help when I can, Jeeps are easy, just get a GM or Ford wiring diagram and your are good to go.

Update,

I think the XJ and the YJ use the same booster assy. The XJ does not use a spacer it just bolts into the firewall. The bolt pattern is wrong and it would also point down if I just drill new holes. I will talk to my fabricator about building an adaptor plate. Might just make this easy to do due to the fact that the rods will not need to be modified, this may be a complete bolt on deal.

Yep - That is what I was thinking... :)

You need a simple firewall plate and you should be god to go! :)

If it is a simple bolt up deal I know what my next project is, LOL.
Hmmm...pwr steering too.

O.K. here is an update, if your bone-yards are like the ones here in Utah, they are crawling with XJ’s, my alternator bracket fabricator and I have come up with an adaptor plate design for the brakes for use on CJ’s, best of all it will be 100% bolt on, no cut, no weld. We are a little swamped with high amp alternators for SEMA and CES so this may take a couple of weeks to finish. Its just as easy to make a bunch all at once than it is to make one so if anyone is interested let me know and we will see if we can get a cheap group price.
