I am considering different possible choices for the exterior paint of the my 1978 CJ5 . Came across a few guys who used colored monstaliner on there full body exterior on there jeeps, and it looks awesome!

Was wondering if anyone had expierience with monstaliner, and other thought they had in painting entire body with monstaliner.

Is it worth it??

A matter of taste, isn't it? you like it do it. keep in mind it isn't ever coming off.

Did you paint your jeep by yourself IO? Wha kind of paint did you use?

Well I just finished having mine sprayed inside and out, but I used bullet liners..prob close to the same thing. I did all the sand blasting though to save money, bought a $200 sandblaster from h.f. And went at it. If I get to rebuild another jeep I will end up doing the same thing. Here's a pic don't pay attention to all dust on it, took the pics after a few days of 40 mph winds.

I did not do it myself, but I could have. body and prep is the hard part, the painting itself is a 30 minute job. I do not remember what brand but it is a two part enamel I think I do know it was not epoxy. Talk to your painter and see what he is comfortable with. I would buy at a real automotive paint store where they have a decent turn over of paint and mix it for you when you buy it. The people at the paint supply are a wealth of information if you can catch them when they are slow and board. check out the local trade school, you may want to take adult ed class.

I like mine shiny and a bright color, I hang out in some places where I would very much like to be as easy to find as possible. It is yellow now and I like that but I have a frame off session on the foreseeable horizon and it is going to need some welding and repair. I do not see bed liner to be a good thing to have when those happen.

The biggest problem I have with bed liner is that it is so permanent. the repair areas are, in a few places lined on the inside and I am not looking forward to grinding, sanding, scraping that stuff out of the heat affected area. replacing the floor panels is going to be a lot harder as well as the drivers side fender notch I am planning.:D

Hey I just realized your in or next to where I grew up ioport! I grew up in Plano but lived in Murphy. Small world! Well I do agree with you on the pain of prepping if repairs are needed, however body repairs have never kept me fom getting home. But I did most all the body repairs before sand blasting and spray on lining. And you can get any color you want and is very shiny these days with all the uv blockers and such. But as you stated it's just a matter of personal preferences :chug:

I do like the front bumper and the liner looks like it belongs there.

your Jeep looks good too and I am glad you like it because that's all that really matters.

Thank, I got the bumper for a steal found it on a damaged/returned parts website for $200 it just had the finish rubbed off the corner:cool: I'm still jealous of your jeep though, you have all the parts I want on mine

Thanks Cabbot! Your jeep is nice, I'm in love with that bumper. I was think about doing the same thing to mine but use monstaliner colored paint, with is just rhino liner with uv resistant color added.

You have some good points IO, I will probably just paint it myself since I have expierience with body work and prep, now all I need is a spray gun.

I've used valspar (tractor and implement paint) in the past. It's a durable paint that holds up well in offroad conditions. However, the place I bought it from (TSC) switch suppliers and now carry majic tractor and implement paint, it also is a very good paint. You can still find valspar at lowes, both brands go for $30 a gallon which is an outstanding value IMO.

That is a very good price. I bought some Caterpillar highway yellow to paint the windshield frame and roll bar with and a quart with activator was about $100. It is more expensive by the quart, pay almost as much as for a gallon.:D

Are there any good automotive paints in aerosol that can just spray on?

Both the paints I mentioned come in aerosol.
Napa can mix up most any auto paint in aerosol as well.

To the OP, I can tell you one thing that you can take to the bank.

Bedliner on any part of a jeep will NOT help resell value.

If I where shopping for a jeep and saw bedliner inside I would run not walk as fast as I could. wouldn't touch it at any price.
did I mention I don't care for bedliner.:D:D mike s.

While my jeep has none, I would entertain the thought of doing liner inside. Outside, agree with mstar, but your jeep, your liner. I dont plan on selling mine so could care less about value. Most of us will never get out of one what we put in them . Diamond plate just screams rust lives here to be me. Folks love their diamond plate too!

Didn't mean to get so emotional.I have seen some interiors done and they look very nice. I had the bed of my 1966 ford short bed done because the paint turned out lousy so I'm a hypocrite(). I agree aluminum tread plate
(ATP) sends of so many alarms it's scary. You know there is evil lurking under that.:D It does look nice though. mike s.

Thanks for all the advice! I will probably paint the outside and will consider the liner for the inside but Mstar is right it would be a PITA to replace panels if it's covered up with sticky rhino liner. I will probably end up painting everything.

What have people done do the bottom of there tubs in the past? I've seen some use rhino liner and some use paint. I have a bunch of surface ruse under mine and want to fix it it before it gets any worse.

Sand or media blast and then por15, I think you can even primer and paint over that. Removing the cancer is the primary goal.

I used Rust Encapsulater on the frame and inside the tub on my trail/road rig. Basically the same thing as por-15 but it's UV rated so it guards against paint fade. The thing about bedliner, they only look good when new.
