I have a 72 CJ5 with a AMC 304 , 3speed, and Dana 20Transfer Case . The engine won't hold oil pressure when it warms up. I have found a 360, T-18Transmission and 300 dana Transfer Case in a 1981 J10 pickup. Does anyone know if I can transplant this complete drive train? My concern is that advance adapters has a kit for the Dana 20 case with a "shorter" Transmission shaft. Has anyone heard of this transplant before?
the j-10 drive train is several inches longer than what you have now. In a CJ5 you would very possibly end up with a rear shaft that would not allow a decent amount of travel.
I have heard of people talking about it but never knew anybody that was successful at it. perhaps in a CJ7 .
For what you are about to get into a rebuilt AMC 304 or a 360 swap is the most practical. not that practical enters into the whole project. There are t-18s and there are t-18s and there are j-10 bell housings and cj bell housings and they just don't mix and match that well.
to fit the T-18 to the cj bell to make it short enough to make it even possible to fit in a cj you have to swap the input shaft for a shorter one. This is not a off the shelf item but rather a after market custom job.
For about the same money you can buy a Ford truck T-18 with a lower granny and an adapter from Novak to mate the Transfer Case . And you still end up with a new drive shaft front and rear.

Thanks for the info. If I were to just buy the 360 engine, would my T-150 bell housing fit? Would I need to buy the clutch that is currently on the 360? The engine is already rebuilt and it currently has a new clutch. Would this be a bolt up?
It should fit your bell with no problem. You have to have the flywheel is is balanced for the engine and is specific to the 360. may as well get the clutch as well.
the AMC 304 and the 360 are the same block just different size holes for the pistons.

After putting a 360/T18a/Dana 20 FSJ drive train in a CJ7 with a stretched wheelbase I would not recommend this for CJ5 . The input shaft is longer on the FSJ version and in every one that I have seen they have a case extension on the front of the tranny. Here is my set-up in my chassis. You can see the big 7" long square between the tranny & bell housing that is not on the CJ/Ford 2wd version:
What makes this possible for me is that the CJ7 has a longer wheel-base than a later CJ5 ( 93" vs 83") stock and my CJ7 will wind up at about 104". The 83" wheelbase of your '72 CJ5 makes this a deal breaker. I have over 21" more room to make my drive-line angles work. Even so I had to tilt my rear axle pinion up and run a CV-joint shaft to the rear yoke. The front retains the 90*/90* pinion yoke faces like most stock lock-out equipped 4wd front axles.
The factory flywheels I have seen are drilled for both the 10.5" & 11" clutches. They are interchangeable and a AMC 304 clutch kit will work fine on a 360 & vice-versa. As mentioned above though the AMC 304 flywheel will have to be balanced for a 360 or the vibrations will be horrible. If the 360 has its original flywheel you are good to go.
"I have found a 360, T-18Transmission and 300 dana Transfer Case in a 1981 J10 pickup."
Also, look carefully at your donor stuff as that Transfer Case would have to be swapped into a FSJ. '80 and newer FSJ's used a driver's drop axle and no FSJ came with a Dana 300Transfer Case ; that was a CJ-only item in jeeps. That Transfer Case has either (1) been swapped in and "flipped" for driver's side, (2) the front axle was swapped to match the Dana 300 's passenger drop front putput, (3) or it is possibly the 4.02 first gear '80 and newer T-18 /Dana 300 combo from a CJ and would not be as desirable as the 6.32 first gear T18a. Unless that truck had the axle swapped to match the factory Dana 300 orientation it will not work for your CJ pass. drop front axle. Check which side the front output on that Transfer Case is located and/or post up some pics. Besides being driver's drop the '80 & up FSJ's with a stick used the NP208 aluminum cased/chain driven Transfer Case . Although not a bad unit it is nowhere near a Dana 20 or Dana 300 in strength. That '81 donor would have to be pretty cobbled up to make the drive train combo posted work especially with the factory front axle. A '79-older T18a FSJ would have a pass. drop front axle & matching Dana 20Transfer Case . Only a fairly rare pass. drop Dana 300 from a one year only ( 1980) Scout will bolt on. Any other Dana 300 would require an expensive adapter to work on a T-18 -T18a that was not originally from an '80 or newer CJ. If your donor set is pass. drop there is a chance it is actually a '79 or older Dana 20 set. The Dana 20 & Dana 300 are very similar in appearance but the Dana 20 lacks the better 2.62 low range of the Dana 300 .

The above listed posts will cover the motor Transmission T/C swap. Your rear drive shaft will be to short. As far as the axles go you will need to outboard the front and install new spring perches on the rear. If you do decide to use the motor, Transmission and T/C for the swap from the J-10 you will be able to use the front axle that came with the J-10 since its on the proper side. Most CJ builder dont like it because its not normal for a CJ.
I am installing a 360/T-18b(waggy or J-10) and Dana 20 TC in my 7 but it will also be stretched quite a bit.. I think it will be well over 110'' so the drive shaft angle will be good.
Another option to go with the 360 is a 727 Transmission .. the Dana 300 will bolt right to the back of it. you need atleast 4" of lift to pull that combo off. Have you looked at checking the clearance in your oil pump? Bulltear sells a steel mid plate and thinner gaskets to help with pump wear. I got a standard midplate plus a thinner gasket today for around $35 shipped. If ti doesnt help the AMC 304 you can reuse it on the 360.
Oh and if it's all stock then the j-10 has a Dana 20 T/C not a Dana 300 .
And if you were to get crazy and swap the axles they are ridiculously wider then a AMC from a CJ. I put a set of J-10 axles under a CJ and almost the whole tire stick out from under it.

Thanks for all the great input. I'm going to just get the engine and clutch, plan to put them in as it should be a bolt up. Plan to take your advise and find a ford T-18 and keep the Dana 20 . Next year....
you can take the adapter off of that Transmission and put a short shaft in it and it will bolt to a 4spd cj bellhousing which would make it about the same length as a T-18 /Dana 20
