I'm tackling my leaky pump seal this week, was wondering if there was anything I should know before I jump into this.. It seems like a pretty simple, standard seal replacement, aside from the labor involved with dropping the tranny/Transfer Case to get to it.. Anyone else been through this? It's an '88 J20, 360ci, torqueflite 727 auto, NP____ Transfer Case ..

Shouldn't give you any surprises. It's a typical 727 Transmission , just with an AMC bolt pattern bellhousing. The shift linkage on the Transfer Case bolts on to the Transfer Case bolts, sandwiching the Transmission to Transfer Case adapter flange between it. You might want to remove the whole shift linkage before pulling the Transfer Case . And it's probably an NP208. If your truck came with lockout hubs and there's no 2WD/4WD switch on the dash, it's a 208.

I'll see if I can snap a picture tonight of the 208 I have that has the linkage still bolted up.

It has the lockout hubs, and a shift lever on the floor kind of under the seat.. 2Hi-4Hi-N-4Lo..

Just got it up on the ramps (again) today.. my son went to the shop the other day, had it up on the ramps, he was under it and popped the rear driveshaft, it then proceeded to roll down the ramps.. he scrambled to get out of the way, but the Transfer Case caught his right shoulder, dislocating it and then ran over his left arm... He is ok, but it scared the hell out of him. He called us from the docs office after they popped his shoulder back in and glued a pretty good cut on his arm back together.... Jeezus, these kids..

Some people's kids...

But yea, that will be a 208.

I got some pictures of the 208 this morning.

You can see the shift linkage and how it should bolt up. I ended up bending the one bracket a little as I pulled it off the truck in the junk yard. If you pull off the couple of bolts, you can remove the linkage without bending it like I did.

Thanks, Derf.. is it easier to take the Transfer Case off the tranny before dropping the tranny, or can they be dropped down together without splitting them??
