A few months ago I purchased one of JB's Aux. idle controls. Now it's time to make it work. I chose the stick as the mounting location similar to the location the bicycle throttles are mounted.

So, it's mounted, the cable runs through a hole in the floor with the proper grommet for the hole. JB gives you LOTs of cable to deal with and a nice little package with a cable stop and some bead chain to connect the cable to the carburetor. I can see the cable needs to be cut and mounted. Sure I can fumble around and finally get it mounted, but if you have done an install your proud of and some pictures I would be happy to see'em. If you'd like to author a story of the install, wow would you be a saint. If not I guess I'll have to do it myself .... sainthood would look good on my pear like body....

Okay, well, fumble along I guess it is. After some looking, as they say I think I've got this! It does surprise me to see that these throttles aren't more popular. They aren't especially new either. I've got a buddy with a '69 that had one in it when he got it. My air force/airplane mechanic friends say these throttles are common on aircraft.

If there is interest I'll photograph how I did this and write it up. ..... If there isn't interest it won't matter I'm going to do it anyways. :)

I have had the bicycle one for years, the really isn't much to it. It is mounted high enough so it can be operated with my hand on the shifter ball. It is used for the onboard air and winching operations mostly.

Had a hand throttle on my Deuce and a half(They all did) and it came in handy both on the trail and for long flat stretches of highway to give your foot a break. Been thinking about one for the 8, interested to see how yours turns out.

Let us not run on and on about other types of throttles, I am installing a JB Fabrication Aux. Idle Control. I've already waded through layer after layer of how to over ride the system by using an inexpensive bicycle shifter. I know, I get it, I ain't using it this time.

Hand throttles are handy for lots of applicatins. Smooth throttle control on bumpy surfaces. Warming up the engine. Making a higher idle for on board air systems. They help in sloppy clutch/hill/ fall over the edge "oh my god I'm going to die" situations. We've read a bunch of information on how useful hand trottles are.

I like the industrial look and feel of this throttle over ride system. I actually started taking pictures of what I have in mind, unfortunately the sun was all wrong at the time and the pictures were terrible. With pictures saving a thousand words I left it until the sun is in a better position for better pictures. My mind is also grinding away comiing up with the best solution to the attachment problem. Yes, I know it's not really that difficult, but I want the final install to look as professional as possible.

The main obsticle is how stiff the cable is along with the bends required to get it done. I'm thinking of using the body, namely the firewall to support the cable until the jump to the stock, but modified throttle bracket. The cable needs to have some flex room so the engine can do it's thing without interfering with the cable.

If anyone is looking for the same thing for 1/3 to 1/2 the price, look for "vernier control cables."

That's exactly what JB reselling you at a huge markup. I bought three for < $50.

You can also use these as axle actuators on a YJ or SJ w/ the disco front axle.

This really isn't about the cost of the throttle.

I did a google search for "vernier control cables". Most of the results were more expensive than JB sells them for some were A LOT MORE. I knew these things were available in other places but the right words for the search weren't obvious. If you have a source that is less expensive than JB's lets have it direct, if not it feels like an attempt to derail those who might be interested in supporting JB's very small business.

JB includes items you nee for install as well. He doesn't tll you how to use them, but they are included. With just a little thinking it's fairly obvious how to use what he includes.

I'm just trying to help folks who might want to save some money. Things are tight out there for some of us.

Here's some links so you don't think I'm lying. I'm sure if I spend more than five seconds searching I could find them for even less. Try local aircraft or truck supply companies for items like this too.

I guess I'm a night type, somehow a flash light seems to help focus on the topic at hand. Last night at 10:00 I popped the hood open and was taking a close look at some nagging under the hood problems. Which lead to starting the under hood cable to carburetor install. Yep, lots of pictures were taken that need to be compiled and shoved into a story. The job is probably 90% with a need to stop by a parts place for some nuts and bolts.

Some early findings:

1 - The cable is VERY stiff and doesn’t like to be bent.
2 - It isn’t nearly as far from the shift lever to the carburetor as I thought it would be, less than 30”, closer to 2’.
3 - If you use a Dremel Tool to cut off the cable the inner sleeve will weld itself closed, a small drill is necessary to fix the problem.
4 - The stock accelerator bracket or plate is made of some VERY hard metal. A drill bit can easily be dulled or burned badly when punching a hole in the plate.
5 – I’m going to like this thing, it’s expensive and feels like a quality piece of equipment.

Edited to add:

Jdarg - Yes, sir I found those too, but I didn't find a source where I could get 3 for less than $50.00. One is a used cable and that is a $25 starting bid. There are several in the $40.00 range but the connecting parts are purchased seperately. The price for the whole set-up would turn out to be about the same. I also found the $33.00 ones. Some looking into them would be interesting, I did dig a bit into them and it appears that the cable might come seperately, but I'm not at all sure of that. There are MANY other cables out there that are far more expensive. I did do my due dillagence using your supplied information. Which by-the-way was very useful and hopefully will be usefull to others. My point is/was, JB's price isn't at all crazy expensive or out of line with what others get for the same product.

I am sensitive to the jab about money. I am not made of money, no sir not at all, money comes hard and other things in my life suffer for my Jeep project. But try to keep in mind that occasionally you have to pay for a quality product. In the past few days I've gotten a darned good look at the guts of this product and was pleasantly surprised. There are precision sliding components, like a close tolerance ball and cup arrangerment holding things together, but making it possible to take the cable off the adjustment mechanism and replace it with little difficulty. There's more to this cable than meets the eye.
