ok so i have a 1978 CJ5 with an AMC 304cid. i got it yesterday. i am an average mechanic, and im really stumped. the jeep will start and idle just fine, but when ever you give it alot of gas(at an idle) it almost dies and then the engine speeds up. now under a load is when the real problem comes. whenever you start to drive the jeep(its a 3spd manual) you must rev it very high to get it to move, otherwise it will die. whenever you try to give it alot of gas while driving on the highway(or anywhere) the engine cuts out, there is no power, and the longer and farther you hold the pedal down, it dies. so pretty much when you give it gas, it cuts out.but idles fine... i checked my vaccum lines and they seem good. maybe my vaccum advance is bad? new carburator and cap and rotor.... i can email pictures. any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!

thanks

Try the old trick spray some carb cleaner/starter fluid lightly around and see if you have a vaccum leak, the idle should change if it sucks in some of the fuild.

New carb. check you needle settings?

ok i"ll try that. i took off the vaccum advance and it runs the same...... and the actuator is working as it should....

What is your timing, both with and without the vac. hocked up? Alao what is your total vac. when reved up?

It also sounds like the accelerator pump might not be working. Do you see gas squirt in the carb when you move the linkage?

well i cant figure out how to time it..... i have a timing light and such, but i dont see any timing marks or anything... i turned it while running at an idle and got it where i think it should be. the vaccum advance actuator moves when reved and yeah, im getting a good amount of fuel. im going to go pick a fuel filter real quick and see if that helps at all. i fugure its cheap and easy, so i'll just put one on real quick

Maybe someone with a AMC 304 can help you find the tab with a pic.
Hopefully it has not been broken off.

i have a 360 in my CJ5 i was having a simular problem and it turned out that the fuel line over the tank was getting pinched slightly and was dry rotted a little , so it was sucking air (like drinkig soda through a cracked soda) get a fuel presure gauge and check that. its real easy to drop the take on cjs. just get a gauge before so droping the tank isnt in vain. also like already stated the carb might not be working properly.

Check your e-brake to ensure it's not engaged. I got a 79 recently and in the tub the e-brake look disengaged but under the tub it was engaged. Try puting the jeep up on jack stands and see if the wheels will turn when you give it some gas.

I had the exact same problem on my 78 AMC 304 , so I rebuilt the carb and replaced all the filters and it solved the problem.
