July 2012 Trail Head Editorial
Getting To The TrailIt’s early morning as I type this. In a few hours I’ll load my wife and three kids into my tow rig and hit the road for Moab and the annual Easter Jeep Safari. Yeah, tow rig. I had high hopes of doing a polyester road trip in the ’78 Cherokee, but it just wasn’t meant to be. A week ago I made the hard call: In its current state, the Monkey Bus isn’t reliable enough to make the round-trip journey from SoCal to Moab. And between shipping this issue to the printer on schedule and all the other projects going on, I didn’t have time to fix it. It feels like failure, but it’s not as big a cop-out as you’d think. Driving a dilapidated, vintage 4x4 on a 2,000-mile wheeling trip is an adventure. And fixing stuff MacGruber-style can be part of the fun. But the trick is knowing where to draw the line between adventure and irresponsibility.
