Alright, I stopped by the local junkyard today and they had a set of TJ leather seats. When I asked the guy "how much?", he replied "you tell me". I have no clue what to even offer. I didn't want to offend the guy, so I said I would have to check with what the wife would let me spend.

So my question to you guys is "how much"? My other question is, would I be able to use these seats in my '86CJ without to much fabrication and modification. These have the TJ bases and everything, if that makes any difference.

Thanks for any help or advice. The seats are in pretty good shape, but you could tell they had been in a Jeep with no top for a while.

Did you do a good measuring job on them to see how much work it will take and get an idea of how comfortable they will be. I would compare bolt pattern on the bottom and thickness of the base and back and the height custom seat mounts are an interesting project. Check out Sasquach's seat mounts, they are killer.
I would go a dollar or a buck and fifty but he may find that insulting. I would say that if he had a number in mind he would have told you. I think PYP gets $80 for the pair if they are cherry.

Thanks, I was thinking around a hundred too. Good point about the measuring and I will try to find Sasquach's seat mounts to look at them.

My biggest concern, as a noob to junkyard dealings, was I didn't want to offend the guy. I know he works hard and I didn't want to come off as condecending or insulting in my offer. But your dollar offer, when done properly could have broken the ice.

Thanks,
Coach

you can not insult a horse trader!! Go for the throat! His first number should be met with a look of total disbelief. Remember: you do not need the seats, you would like the seats. He has a number and you have a number. You want the seats and he wants you to have them, he can not but things with seats, he has to have your money. every day he keeps them his return on investment goes down.
He just called you out!! Make him work for it. Junk yards are a ball! :D

Thanks, you are right, I wasn't looking at it the right way. I will take some measurments to assure they would fit and probably go back and take another look at them. If they look like they will fit, I'll make an offer. Will start low and see where we go from there. I'll be sure and take cash too, since that should help negotiations. :chug:

Junk yards are all about "Let's make a deal". Cash talks and always remember to make them eat any taxes. Around here they tend to be located in the same area. After you get a price tell him you will be back after you check out the other yards. Sometimes this works to get a lower price offer.

I'm surprised you were able to find a tj in a junk yard.
When ever I've looked there are NO cj, yj, tj at all in Alaska junkyards.
That's why I jumped on this wreck when I found it.
The parts are probably worth 2 or 3 times what I paid for the jeep.
