Hello everyone,

Today i purchased an '85 CJ7 , and have some questions if you dont mind:

1. How many quarts of oil does the 2.5l engine hold?
2. How do i adjust the E brake, as it rolls slightly and the pedal is all the way down?
3. The 4 wheel light on the speedo is on, but im fairly certain the Transfer Case is in N (i think)?
4. Do i have to lock the front hubs in or what?

sorry for the dumb questions, but i am new to the CJ vehicle, but looking forward to working and modding the thing.

also, its an 85 model, with the 4 banger and a fourspeed manual. any idea as to the type of tranny and axles? its bone stock. thanks for any help.

as a continuation to the 4 wheel drive light, i assume that the Xfer case should always be in the neutral position for normal highway driving?

at what speeds should the Xfer case be in H and L? thanks again for any help, does anyone have a PDF of the owners manual that they would like to share? if so, my email is my username at yahoo.com. thanks again.

#1- 4-5 quarts. I would empty it then add 4 quarts check it and see where it is ten add the 5th to get you into the full area.

#2- if you look at the back side of the backing plate on the rear wheels there should be a narrow 1-1-1/2" sli cut into it. There may be a plastic or rubber plug in it to keep dirt out. Behind the plug should be a wheel that looks like a small cowboy spur. That needs to be turned to tighten it. I take my wheel off to do it, it makes it alo easier.

#3- If the light is on the shifter is either completely or partially engaged in 4wd. To drive it in 2wd the Transfer Case needs to be in 2wd. In neutral neither output will turn so it won't move under it's own power.

#4- If you want to be in 4wd then the front hubs need to be locked. It sounds to me like the Transmission is in 4wd but the hubs are not locked allowing you to drive it as 2 wd.

For your continuation post #3 answers your first question. The second one would be easier to answer with a pic of the parts to give you an exact answer. The Transfer Case should be a Dana 300 , front axle Dana 30 and rear AMC20 . If the rear Has any thing other then a big round cover post a pic of it, if it's completely round it's a AMC20 .

Not to sound like a d-bag but If you google most of those questions you can find the answer.. Not that we mind answering them but you can normally find pics, videos and more thorough procedure for stuff like adjusting the brakes.

Good luck and post any other questions you need help with.

actually, i have googled my butt off but cant find much information on the parking brake adjustment how-to. i was hoping there was a simple adjustment at the pedal. guess not. thanks for the reply, its appreciated.

Check out the first 2 videos that pop up when I googled "how to adjust drum brakes"

how to adjust drum brakes - Google Search

I didn't watch the whole video but seems like he is on the right track. They are actually out of order. The second one is for the big adjustments and first is fir final adjustments. I woul also look at how much play is in the cables. The two parking brake cables attach to the ends of a curved part that the main e-brake line attaches to the middle of it. there should be a threaded part of the cable the has a nut on the end. If there is a lot of slop in the lines it will not fully engage the parking brake.

Majority o drum brake adjust the same way so it doesnt have to be a jeep specific search.

thanks for all the help. i went and bought a Haynes manuel and just got done with the adjustment. the shoes seem to be pretty thin, about 1/8 of an inch in material left. guess that will be the next thing to get done. thanks again for all the help.

#2....the adjustment for tension is midway back on the cable. It's basically a nut that tightens and relieves pressure on the cable. I would start there and see what happens....but if your shoes need replaced, they simply need replaced.

Heres a link for a copy of the fsm 84-86 cj7s I've tried to download it and email it to you but I have dail up and it takes forever. Its a big file 20mb and about 1300 pages but worth the time and effort to download. Heres the link http://www.civilianjeep.info/84-86FSM/CJ-FSM-84to86.pdf
