Just curious to know.. What's everyone's crawl ratios?
I do not know what your plans with your Jeep are but I want to be able to do as much as possible with mine and I selected my 5 speed Transmission gears and tires based on wanting to drive on the highway and still be fairly capable off road.

The lower you go on your gear set the harder you push your motor on the road. That is why I suggested the Tera Low set for your Transfer Case . That will probably be cheaper to do than swapping ring and pinions :chug:

Gotcha. I have thought about the Tera-low kit as well. I was playing around with numbers and if I go to 4.10 gears, with the Transmission I have I'll have a 55:1 in 4 low, granny low and running 60 down the highway turning about 2500 rpm. So I think it's going to come down to pricing! [emoji41][emoji41]

Holy smokes how's the 133.1 working out?

I wheeled my friend's rig for a day with a similar gearset to get a feel for it before making a decision on what gearset I would run.

With the tight trails in the northeast, and a dislike for heavy use of the skinny pedal the 133's work great for me. I enjoy seeing just how slow I can climb an obstacle. If I do need a bid of momentum there is always second gear at 65.1.

The only time I enjoy smashing the skinny pedal is when I'm in a rental barbie Jeep facing a challenging obstacle. :D

60:1 - does pretty good for me. Wouldn't mind a bit lower still for the con, but it's doable, and definitely easier than it was at stock 27:1. That hurt with all the burnt clutches and bouncing over rocks!

One day I'll get that low kit for my Dana 20 and hit 90:1

Or maybe swap in a Dana 300 and low kit for 120:1

:D

:chug:

Figured mine out just for giggles. stock 1971 and 1969 CJ5 's
T-14 X d 18 X 4.88 X 31" TIRES about 36. Coupled with the low rpm chugging of the Dauntless Buick 225 V6 engine with the 50 # flywheel its pretty good for around NW fire roads and mud. I need to get into some rocks. Oh ya almost forgot, with the Warn O-drive still does 65 mph on interstate.
cheers mike. Pray that everyone is safe tonight on east coast

Sounds like a pretty cool combo

I have run the 'Ruby' with std d/300 gears and with my 4:1. The 4:1 does make it easier. But don't sell yourself short, the std D/300 gearing will work, if you have the tranny and R&P needed.

My '73 CJ5 has a 61.3:1 crawl ratio on 36" Swampers
-Old Chevy NP435 close ratio Transmission (4.56)
-Dana 20 w/Teralow gearset (3.15)
-Dana 30 /Dana 44 locked axles (4.27)

Just had it out this weekend on the Potts Mountain Jeep Trail near Roanoke in Southwestern Virginia. Had a nice mix of dirt trail and rock obstacles on the 7.5 mile trail. The crawl ratio is great when compared to what it was stock (22.3:1) but I'm thinking a little lower, that a wide ratio Transmission would give me with a 6.5 ratio 1st gear, would give me even better control when dropping off rock ledges and whatnot. Looking for a SM465!

Collecting parts to re-gear my Scrambler, but I still haven't decided between the two Transmission that I have - a wide ratio T-18 and a close ratio T19. Leaning toward the T19, installing 4.0:1 gears in a Dana 300 , and 4 to something axle gears which will give me a crawl around 70:1 - perfect for both slow speed rock obstacles and driving around town and to the trails.

What size tire on the 'S' will you be using?

I have a set of 315/75-16s on it but the gearing just sucks. When I built it I used drivetrain components from two late 70s CJs that I had for parts - currently it has a T-150 , Dana 20 , and 3.54 axle gears. I figured that the full synchro'd T-19 will be great around town and a 4.1 low range gearset in a Dana 300 would put me where I want to be for the trail. I also have a doubler sitting on a shelf if I every wanted to go lower or found that I "needed" an intermediate low range gear.

W/31's, I wouldn't go any 'deeper' that 4:10 R&P. With 32-33" tires, look at 4:56.

My crawl ratio is not very good on paper - 4.56 r&p x 2.62 x 2.48 1st gear = 29.63, but my Transmission is a GM Turbo 400 auto behind a 401 v8, and it creeps up stuff pretty well with very little drama on 35x12.50's because of the "torque multiplying", or slippage or whatever you want to call it effect of the torque convertor. It basically behaves like a manual Transmission rig with about a 50/60:1 ratio. Just point it up the hill, bring the revs up to about 12-1500 and it goes right over stuff, no fuss. My carb is a Sean Murphy Q-jet and it will run smoothly at pretty stupid angles, and this rig is super easy to drive compared to a manual, its kinda like cheating.

I think this is where everyone chimes in with "Real men drive manual Transmission jeeps" or some such.:D

You'll never hear me say that. And mine has a T-18 . Trust me, if there had been enough drivetrain room, there would have been an AOD in my CJ5 .

Me either-For 'rocking' an auto is great. The big concern is the heat buildup.
Hope you have a good-sized tranny cooler with fan in place.

That's one sweet drivetrain I'm a manual Transmission guy but autos are stupid easy

I do have a fairly large Derale Stacked plate style cooler with 2 hi output fans mounted underneath the bed, right in front of the fuel tank. The fans are controlled by a themostatic switch mounted in the Transmission oil pan. Thermo switch is closed @ 180 deg, open @ 165 deg. The fans cycle on and off during the course of operation so I assume they are getting the job done, otherwise would run continuous.

Also have a large aggressive 7 blade 19" fan from an early Cadillac I believe, mounted on a heavy duty fan clutch with a tightly fitted fan shroud for the motor. Highest temp seen on the engine so far is about 210 with a 180 tstat, hot day heavy load. I know 401's run hot so that's why I separated the Transmission cooling and engine cooling. The Transmission seems to build more heat running down the highway at 60 mph than it does crawling up a hill for an hour. Go figure.

Good to hear this-Many folks don't understand that a by-product of an auto-Transmission , is lots of heat. Heat will kill an auto in a very short time.
If you ever feel the want in posting pictures of your set up with the coolers et-all. I would love to see them. :notworthy:

It's really neat to read and learn about everyone's setups. Keep em comin guys!
