I'm trying to get a AMC 304 -401 from a friend if I can't get one does anyone know where I could get one from?

Check the local junk yards for international trucks, scouts, or full size jeeps cherokee, wagoneer, trucks. Look for old AMC vehicles also.

Just a heads up a AMC 390 or 401 has forged internals and is what I'd personally hold out for.

The IH AMC 304 will not bolt into an AMC - just be sure it is an AMC 304 ...

what about the 390's? A buddy of mine had a 69 AMX with a Mark Donahue 390 in it. Sorry if I missed spelled his last name.

It will bolt in - pretty damn rare engine to be putting in a CJ. The clutch linkages may need to be fabbed depending on how the block was treated at the factory. I had a 390 in my CJ but I gave it back. It was a waste of a rare engine (and my friend asked for it back )...

So, to set things straight. All AMC 304 -401 third gen V8's have the same mounts. Find one or find several - they all will bolt in where another third gen V8 was.

Forgot about IH AMC 304 , thanks for catching that.
Guess I shoulda clarified, people swap AMC engines into scouts,
I've looked under the hood of a few in the yard near me and found 360's
in about 80% of them. Weird.

Looks like I found a AMC 360 for $125.00, got my 350 sold , so I'm gonna pick it up soon .
