My 1978 CJ7 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l factory carburetor is starting to go out. A reman from parts house is around $200. I always wanted to upgrade to a carter 2 barrel. This might be the time to do so. Didn't know if the kits for the 2 barrel were completely plug and play. Or is it more to it than just using the kits that come with the 2 barrel. Also is there an advantage or disadvantages to just keep the factory 1 barrel on it

Trash it. Get a MC 2100 or better yet go EFI. Also upgrad your ignition while you're at it. It's all relatively cheap (except for the EFI) and easy to do you won't regret it. The 2100 is far superior to the Carter

No. You will need a an adapter plate (2100 is a two barrel using a standard square bore bolt pattern) and a V8 throttle cable. You can do away with the linkage this is my AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l (I'm running EFI) but it's the EFI version of the the 2100. I ran that for 20 years problem freea0b0b9e304181fa96d2bb17200ddfcc2.jpg

Manic is right if you choose to keep a carb. EFI is the real way to go if you're OK with more work and cost. Better performance, cold starts, altitude changes and angles don't bother it, easy to do with minor electrical knowledge to hook it all up. But the MC2100 carb is a great choice for better performance and reliability as far as carbs go.

Since it's a 1 barrel intake is it worth putting on a 2 barrel. Efi is not an option HEI ignition possible someday.

Yes 2 barrel is the way to go. It allows a little better fuel and air distribution to the outer cylinders as the center cylinders always run a tad rich and the outers a tad lean
