So the key broke off in the ignition of my 84 CJ.

Anybody had this happen before. Hoping for some easy trick to remove the broken off piece. Is a complete disassembly required?

Thanks for any help!

A lock smith can do it in about three minutes, don't know how much you will need to pay but it may well be cost effective. give one a call , let us hear about it. shouldn't be much if he doesn't make a house call.:D

if the key is in the off position (so will come out easy) you can try a very small amount of adhesive, though I would not do this unless absolutely necessary, as it may leak off to inside the lock, and then you need a new ignition... :p

But if you take broken section, put a little supper glue on it (tiny bit) and let it tack up a little (not all the way dry which is the problem) and then try to push it into the lock carefully, push into the remaining section of the key, hold, then carefully try to remove.

I have had this work, but not on a ignition. And I agree with IO :notworthy: that a locksmith is a MUCH better option... He's right the locksmith will make it look incredibly easy and quick.

Can you get a very small toothpick (the old metal dentist type...) in there?

sorry about the caps and bolds... just wanted to emphasize a little... ;)

:chug:

please post pic of broken key it may determine breakdown or not

i have had to use a smaller paper clip by sliding it in the groove of the key then bending the clip down as i carefully pull

other tools i have used look like an arrow ( half of one)

if you can drive take to a lock shop they shouldnt charge you more than $10
if they say break it down drive home and you do it ( $50 if they do it )
or hell drive down here I will get it out

if you do have to break it down then just replace the key switch............its got 27 years of wear and tear and theres brass, pop metal and other soft metals inside that wear easily with time

Thanks for the tips everyone!

Advice was wise... took to locksmith who had it out in 2 minutes. He said I got lucky as the tumblers had not closed behind the broken off end. He used a very thin wire, similar to the "paper clip" approach suggested above.

Including two new keys, total damage was $25. Can't beat that :)
