My brother, after owning half a dozen jeeps, decided to get an old land rover (his mistake). He rebuilt most of it it runs but not very well. I told him maybe someone on here might know whats going on with it. This is the email he sent me describing it.

its a 1960 land rover series 2 with a military re manufactured 2 1/4 liter 4 cylinder with a zenith carb it has sat for 2 years so i cleaned and rebuilt the carb also had to replace the fuel pump and filter. since the carb rebuild it starts up ok and runs but if u push down on the gas it almost dies but if you push it slow it runs good to higher rpms but if u open throttle all the way it stutter and misses. when i try driving it there is just no power and not enough power to shift into third gear

Sounds like a malfunctioning accelerator pump - with the engine and the air cleaner off, look down the carb throat and pump the accelerator pedal - is there a good steady stream of fuel?

Oh no don’t say Model A makes me want it back.

You are going to be very surprised at how rich you will want to run it, you must be very carful at matching up the gaskets to make sure you have the correct kit. If you had 2 gaskets at any point then it is warped, it’s the old trick to compensate for the warping . Finally check your pressure and volume of fuel.

I haven't gotten to work on it. School started back up so I'm way busy. Going to try to see if I can do some work on it this weekend. I'll let ya know what I find out. :)

Keep us informed... It's a very interesting problem.... :)

I think old "Land Rovers" & acceleration are mutually exclusive.;)
Save for downhill runs with a tailwind.
I'm sorry sometimes I just can't help myself.

LMAO!!! Your a BAD man LH!

So we pulled the carb off and tore it apart. I was slightly warped as they usually are so we fixed that. Also while it is running the accelerator pump isn't working proper but when we pulled it off it worked fine. Cleaned everything out with high pressure air. Put it together again and it still isn't working proper...... Oh also the engine that my brother bought for it was a military rebuild that was a crate motor that's supposed to be ready to just drop in, well we pulled the valve cover off and discovered that a couple of rods had slipped aside the rocker (which explains the black/oily spark plugs). Put those back together and it runs a helluva lot better. Still can't figure that accelerator pump though.....
