Just picked up this 73 CJ5 . I don't know much about it yet.
The one thing I know for sure is it's going to need a new front clip.

Looks like a good project but I'm having a hard time with the thought of driving top down in those conditions!

LOL. Believe me, I didn't drive it far.
Actually it's reletively warm today. This is the 1st day above zero in a month, and it made it all the way to +15.
It does get pretty cold here at times though.

Interesting front tilt. No room for a winch though.

Noticed the tank under the seat. PO must have put that in. They came with a rear tank in 73.

Front clip will get replaced with something like this
Kentrol Inc.

Under seat gas tank seems to be home made, that'll go away also.

I doubt someone would go to the trouble of the under seat fuel tank and replaceing the seat/frames, are you sure of it being a 73?

Steering column looks like my stock one with a custom wheel on it.

We need some closer pics.

The VIN number will tell the story.

I'm not sure of anything, except it's a Jeep.:D
The Transmission is 4 speed with reverse to the right and up.

BUBBA (the po) did in fact, do a lot of customizing.

whats the vin #

I'm not sure I want to post that on the internet:confused:

Then you can research it from a service manual or online decoding info. The engine and Transmission are certainly not gona help you ID it as they are no guarantee to be original. You are going to want to know what acctual vintage it is so you can get correct parts when you need them.
It's also a fun guessing game if you supply small amounts of info with fuzzy pics and we take stabs at it..:D

Looks to be pre 1970 after closer insp. to me? Steering columm looks like for the Ross system, does it go directly to steering box along side the motor?
The Early CJ-5 and CJ-6 Spotters’ Guide « Earlycj5.com

The '72-'75 colums look the same as the earlier ones from inside the jeep. They also kept the same seat frames thru '75 so you can easily bolt the inside fuel tank in if you desire to,makes for an easy aux tank option. The back edge of the front fenders clearly reveals its a '72 or newer.Everything in the pictures is consistant with it being a '73[or '72/'74/'75].

Game over?

I went out and did a little more looking.
The frame is unboxed and a lot lighter than my 80 CJ5 .
There are dozens of holes where there used to be something:o
There's a 1/4" plate welded in front to support the steering box.
99% of the wiring has been removed.
Has an Offenhauser intake and an Edelbrock carb.
Motor starts right up but seems to have a skip.
Has access panel on floor for frame mounted master cylinder.
Has front disc brakes

Fuel tank does not look factory and if it had frame mounted M cylinder it would have the pedal hole in the floor, the access under the throttle would not be in the right spot for M cylinder.
Does it have a fuel fill in the rear too? and tank?

I found an online decoder and it is a 73, has the correct engine, but should be a 3 speed.
Maybe the access is for clutch adjusting?
The hole is there for the rear tank fill/cap but thats all.

Well I think if IOport were here to chime in he might say you have a 73 that has been "field modified" by the PO.
