Is this seal able to be removed externally or do in need to remove timing cover? I cannot remember from installation

The front main seal is installed from the inside of the timing cover. Make sure that it is not leaking from the front of the oil pan were the front cover and the pan come together. Also check on top were the intake meets the block. I have had oil leaks in the past in both places and it ran down by the front seal.

That sucks. Was hoping to pop it out and replace without removing timing cover

You can do the seal in place if you've got the AMC tool. I had to pull mine and source a new cover from a junk yard because I snapped a tooth off my timing gear set. It bounced around and punched holes in the old timing cover. It won't hurt to pull it and check for slack in your gear set.
