I am a bit embarrassed asking this question. I am in the process of installing a 2.5 inch lift kit in my 1985 CJ7 . I have my jeep on blocks and I noticed, I forgot to order the rubber pads that sandwich under the axle and the leaf spring. What are those pads called? Will I need to order new ones or can I use the old ones. I don't really want to since everything is going to be new.
I have never done a lift kit before, so it's a learning process. Thanks for your help as always.

I think it's called a Spring Perch, it holds the axle in place and sits on the leaf spring. Do you usually replace these, mine are original and just look a bit dirty not damaged.

I don't know of any RUBBER pad that goes between the spring and the perch. Or anywhere for that matter.
There might be a wedge shaped shim in the back, but it would be made out of steel. And as far as I know the factory never used them.
If you take a pic. of the old one maybe we can see what your talking about.
Or maybe someone else knows something I'm not thinking of.

Im a bit embaressed myself. Any chance on getting a pic?

when i did my 2.5" lift there was no rubber there. the axle just mounted on the springs.

Here is a picture of the area to show you guys. It looks like a cup that cups the axle and sits on top of the spring. It's made of metal, not rubber like I thought.

Ok thats the perch, and it's welded onto your axle. Just clean it up and your good. (make sure it's not rusted away)

Old Dog, can that perch taken off and used on my aftermarket leaf springs or do I have to order new perch's? Do I even need a perch to use on my new leaf springs? I am all new to this stuff, so I appreciate the help. :)

The pearch will stay on the axle as it's welded to it. So yes the new spring
mounts to the old perch.

If the perch does come off the axle, let us know, things just became a whole lot more interesting.

talk about opening up a entire brand new category for us to deal with, Slipping spring perches. I can see the first post, I was going down trail today when I hit a rock, suddenly I noticed a clunk, I looked under and my diff was shifted to one side and the driveshaft was on the ground, Do you guys think that maybe 25 pounds of torque was to little when I put on My 6 inch lift?:wtf::wasted::doh::lpopcorn::lpopcorn::lpopcorn:

LOL! I'll let you guys know. I guess the rear perches are attached to the axle housing also? Just making sure before I tear stuff out that I don't need any other parts.

Cheers :chug:

You’re going to be OK.
I will make one suggestion, use, beg borrow an air compressor and air ratchet or impact to put the new U bolts on. They are fine thread and about 3" (seems like 3 miles) long and you have 8 nuts to put on, they are also lock nuts. It takes forever to do this by hand and when you are through you can enter the Canadian arm wrestling championships.

I am still laughing over the Canadian Arm Wrestling.

I have a 13 gallon compressor, air ratchet and impact gun, so that should help out. I have a little more experience with them than the lift kit, but I know I am up for it and it's all about gaining knowledge and having fun.
Thanks for the help IO and laughs.

Cheers, Brian

i did mine with a rachet and it took forever and had one hell of a sore arm the next day. i couldnt get the jeep high enough to get my electic impact under it.

Your going to want to have a "click" type torque wrench also, it's kinda hard to read one upside down, 1 foot off the ground.:D

I was lucky, when I did mine I was working for a trucking co. and had run of the shop. All that was Jeep was a frame, and the axles were on a bench. I bolted up the springs, fork lifted the axles onto 4 big stands, and hoisted the frame onto them. When I was done, I dropped the frame back down, and dropped the drivetrain into the frame. I sure miss that damn shop...:(

My number one favorite air tool is the 3/8 ratchet, It sure speeds things up.
