new to me 85 cj7, 85 Virgo chopping into a bobber rattle can rat bike, and a 89 90 horsepower merc outboard bass boat
85 CJ7 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 5 speed on a tight budget looking for best hight in a lift to fit 33's and without vibrations and using shims? I wouldn't mind cutting fenders and using flares to help with hight. Fl cj so mud and trails and some day to day driving. Is Rough Country that bad of lift or is it cheaper than the rest for a reason? Thanks any suggestion welcome.

your going to need a 4" lift for 33s. stay away from cheep lifts. go with skyjacker, superlifts, or black diamond. i have a pro comp and its not to bad.

No lift. Just cut your fenders. Your jeep will be 4 inches lower - better on road and off. The problem there comes when you go to sell your jeep. Many people don't like the looks of a jeep with the fenders cut.

To truely fit 33's without trimming you need a 4" lift. It will come with shims and vib's. are pretty common.
If you don't mind trimming than anything from a 2 1/2" lift or maybe none at all as Dave said. TJ flairs work well with a 2-3" lift I know.
And yea rough country lift's are cheap for a reason, spend the extra few bucks, you won't be sorry.

I have the Skyjacker 2 ½ lift with 1 inch body lift. I have run 33’s with no problem, I just prefer 31’s so that’s what I run. You will also have to consider the wheel off set to keep from dragging on the frame.
Don’t cheep out on your suspension, your kidneys will thank you.

Try a BDS 4" lift ,YJ rear flares and a 1" body lift.

Hi gang, I recently installed a Rough Country 2.5 inch lift in my CJ7 and I got to say it is excellent, good ride quality and excellent price. I am very happy with my lift and I would buy another one without hesitation. It was a snap for me to install and it was my first time.

this rides better than the stock springs??

IO, it rides really well, I was surprised after hearing all the negativity. I found a blog site that had mostly good reviews regarding the Rough Country lift kits. Apparently they changed spring manufactures a little while ago and pulled up there socks. I was happy with the lift kit, it was complete and the customer service was very helpful. Sorry I can't slam them, I am happy with my kit and would buy another one if I was restoring another CJ.

It's great to hear there's a company changing from bad to good, it's usually the other way around.

Yes, I think if they didn't change or improve their product, then no one would buy there kits. Do I want to be in business or do I want my business to fail.
Give the public a good product at a good price makes good business. I am very happy with their product and price.

hey thanks for the info, my budget is tight so Rough Country might still be a contender

So this may be a dumb question but.....my jeep has, by my measurements, about 8 inch shackles with around 6.5 inches between bolts. How do you tell how much is the vehicle actually lifted?

You have about 1 3/4 inches of lift from the shackles.
Stock shackles are 3 inches. Yours are 3.5 inches longer but a shackle lift only lifts one side of the leaf spring so devide 3.5 by 2 and that's where I got 1.75 inches of lift.

Thanks for the info, it sure seems higher than that when you are trying to get in and out of the thing.

Is it possibly lifted somewhere else as well?

It could have lift springs or a body lift.
JFYI thoes extra long shackles are going to cause you problems, I would put some shorter ones on if I were you.

What kind of problems will they cause. I just got the thing, got it running, and put a back drive shaft on it. First time driving it the Jeep was all over the road, the faster we went the worse it got.
