My 360 is out to be rebuilt. The driveshafts and tranny and Transfer Case are in. What is the safest way to drop the skid plate with tranny and Transfer Case . Should I wait to rebuild Dana 300 till motor is in and just drop that? The whole reason I got on this is because there is a buildup of goo on the skid plate and wanted to remedy the cause.

Your skid plate is the only thing holding your Transmission and Transfer Case in the Jeep so if you drop it now every thing is going to come out with it. I would wait until you have your engine bolted back up to the Transmission then you can just drop the skid plate.

Ok, I'll wait. Probably best to limit projects right now, there are too many already. Is a Dana 300 easily rebuildable?

Yes, the Dana 300 is pretty easy to rebuild for someone with fairly good mechanical skills. Two things to be concerned with off the top of my head are:

1. On the intermediate shaft, use a heaping helping of grease to keep the bearings in place when you are inserting the shaft.

2. Be careful when pulling out the shift rail because there are spring/ball assemblies in there that can come flying out.

I got my last rebuild kit from Novak, and not only did it have all the parts, but came with some of the best instructions I've seen, that take you through the whole process. Here is the link:

Nice link! Thanks

Oh, and btw, while I'm thinking about it, if you order the rebuild kit, get the "long output" option, because the kit comes in both long and short versions. Only the 1980 model used the short one. Also, there is a International Harvester version, but for obvious reasons, you don't want that one either.

If the motor is out wrap a chain around the Transmission /Transfer Case and bring it up the shifter cover at the floor. Put your cherry picker arm through the door and hook it up leaving the arm high enough to drop it all down once the skid plate is unbolted from the frame.

Ingenuity , hats off to you

Germy, I just finished Dana 300 rebuild - drove it today for the first time since February.

Taking it apart was kinda tough - used Ludel-s Jeep Bible. When it came time to reassemble, I didn't have enough of a workbench/press to get all the bearings off, then pressed on again. Had to get the final assembly done at a local shop.

If I live long enough to have to do it again (or if I lose my mind and buy another ragged-out Jeep), I think I'd tackle it.

BTW, I used a floor jack with a cradle chain-sawed from a piece of 4X4 pressure-treated to help balance and hold up the Dana 300 . Don't let it fall on you (been there, done that!).

I don't have a press or anything.

Yes, you will need at least a small arbor or similar press for the build. You can either get a moderately priced one, or have a local shop do the press work for you.
