Taking off the timing cover to check the chain and if everything was installed correctly. Multiple loose bolts were found disassembling. Once I got the balancer off I found these score marks in the new cover. The new cover leads me to believe that the chain was replaced but with all the things I’m finding incorrect or loose I want to pull the cover and check. (Piece of mind). Now I’ve rebuilt motors before. But never in a situation where it’s going to sit long opened up. At the dealership we had the motors rebuilt in no time. Is it ok to leave the motor opened up for an extended period of time? Ex. No coolant. Etc.

On another note. When I reminded the crankshaft bolt. Oil came pouring out.

Sounds like the balancer was not OEM:confused:
Pull the valve cover and ck the head bolts.

Maybe the rubber on the balancer is coming apart (common) and the outer ring slipped enough to get into the cover. Might check that.
I just finished up an LS build for my “other Jeep” and it sat for weeks at a time opened up on the engine stand. Get you a LARGE trash bag can keep the entire thing covered when not working on it. Keep the dirt and Biggs out, also little curious finger...

^^I agree and it looks like the balancer was on to far.

I've been slowly putting together a 351w for my CJ5 . I plan on being done by the end of the summer...started this past winter.

Be sure to apply assembly grease (or oil depending on what you're installing) on everything and keep it covered with a large garbage bag. The thicker, the better...that way if it gets bumped around, it won't get any holes.
