I'm looking for a good solution... I want a 2" receiver on my 77 CJ7 . I don't necessarily plan to tow a lot, but I want to put my nice cargo rack on there to haul luggage, etc. I do have a stock hitch I could bolt a 2" adapter to, but concerned about the amount of weight it could handle.

What are my options?

I have a Smittybilt bumper on mine. It's the only one out there I've seen that has a tow rating published. It was for a wrangler so I had to add some holes in the rear crossmember to make it fit a Jeep. They provide a template.

Well, I like both of these options. Torx, can you share some design specs on yours and Pa - is it the JH44 that you used?

I have a 4x4 square tube bolted to the back of my Jeep with a receiver bolted to the bottom. Tied it into the frame using angle iron like Torx did, used grade 8 hardware on everything. I tapered the ends of the tube so it has the proper "bumper" appearance, gives me a step, and I bolted some D ring brackets I had made on too.

Just something to consider. ACME hitch cost me $25ish, piece of 4x4 steel, 1/4" thick, and 60" long (IIRC) was $60, and he drilled the holes and tapered the corners. Angle iron I had around the shop, and bolts came from tractor supply by the LB.

STOUT rear bumper, cheap, and has receiver hitch.

I also had a matching one of these made for my Dad's Jeep, with welded in Dring brackets, and a removable swing away bumper mounted tire carrier.....

007 - I used the Smittybilt SRC classic rock crawler SRC Classic Rear Bumpers - Smittybilt with the spare tire carrier, receiver hitch and 2 D-rings and clevis’s. It had a template to use for the new holes. Note that my frame is a TDK frame so it looks a bit different at the rear.
