1979 Jeep CJ7 304 V8 3 spd trans
Just picked up a 79 CJ7 with the AMC 304 & 3 speed Transmission ,
Very clean but was wondering if
1. what automatic Transmission could I swap into this and what all is needed
2. Has anyone swapped in a tilt steering column and what have they used
3. Can the drivers sat be moved back any

I just picked this up for a good price, my wife would like to drive it but she can't handle a stick shift and I need the other mods to make it a better fit for me, If not I might be re-selling it and getting something else.

That picture shows a CJ 5, not a CJ7 .
The '5' is to short for any auto Transmission , and why the factory never installed one in a CJ5 .
Tilt can be installed. How good of a 'wrench' are you? Takes a bit of work.
How close does the driver's seat come to the rear fender?

Good looking CJ5 ... welcome.

Everyone needs to know how to drive a stick anyway... divine providence.

Bought in an Estate sale was told it was a CJ7 but I thought 7's had had a tailgate and this one doesn't have a tail gate, I'm a mechanic by trade restoring a 71 Muscle car so that would be no problem as for the seat I pick it up friday and will look after i get it home

CJ7 'shave square doors and are longer than the real traditional CJ5 's with proper humped doors. ..... A little CJ5 vs CJ7 owner joke there. The tailgate thing is a little all over the place and I'm not really sure which models specifically have the gate. I for one like a tail gate, it's a nice place to sit and have lunch and it's an easy way to add ~1 foot to the bed when you need it. Others like the fact that a CJ without a gate doesn't rattle.

Welcome, I would suggest you check with Novak Conversions "knowledge base" and Advance Adapters for the automatic Transmission conversion. The wheel well notch has been done by many and there should be plenty of info on that and the tilt steering column. Nice looking CJ5 . Happy jeep'in

I didn't allow my kids to get their DL till they could prove to me they could drive my Jeep's 5 speed. :D

Thanks, It's one of my riding partners her Dad passed and she is selling off some things. He only drove it on NICE days and parked it carpet in the garage

Can you post more pictures of this Jeep?
Sounds like you have a 'time-capsule'. :notworthy:

If you really want the automatic Transmission , the only one that I think would fit would be a TH350 with the Transfer Case being a small one in front to rear length. May be a Dana 300 or a Dana 20 . You'll also need a custom drive shaft (I suggest a Wood's Driveshaft) with a couple of double cardan u-joints. Look at spending some bucks for all of this.

Given the nature of the Jeep (looks really clean and near stock), keeping it stock might be the best way to go. It's hard to find a good stock CJ. The other option would be to sell the CJ5 and get a CJ7 . The automatic Transmission is the reason for the CJ7 . The added length allowed Jeep to provide the Auto option. That's the reason I bought my CJ7 , as it came with the GM Turbo 400 Automatic Transmission .

Hey OP-Any updates??
