I own a stock 1970 CJ5 . I will need new tires very soon.
I am looking for tires that can be used for Limited off-road use but also give a nice ride on pavenment and most important they must be CHEAP.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

You sure dont ask for much do you?? A cheap tire that performs well off road and also is good on pavement. :wtf: :dunno:

Honestly though the tire that I think is the closest to fitting that description is a Bfg All Terrain. If you want a little more agressive the Bfg Mud Terrain is a great tire.

X2 on BFG thats where im headed when mine is done :chug:

I almost forgot about this one. I was shorter on cash awhile back and was looking for some cheaper all terrains. I ran across some from Cooper , I just cant remember what they were. Discoverer?

Search them out if you want. They had bigger voids than the Bfg and I think thats wahat made them clear out a little better than the Bfgs. It also added some more noise.

Buckshot mudders, cheap and work well.
But also bounce that price against super swampers,
They are cheaper than most depending on size.

Cost out the window I always recommend BFG KM2's.

Put BFG AT's on mine and happy so far besides the fact that my gravel driveway rocks seem to fit perfect in the tires tread then come out when you hit about 45mph and sounds like they are doing a fine job of pulverising my wheel wells.:(

most bang for the buck would be DC FCII radias, cost aa bit on the front end, but wear like iron, and a killer AT

I am running a great set of ProComp AT tires that I got on Craigs List. Very happy with them and since someone else decided to upgrade I got the set of 4 with 70% of tread left for only $100. Mounting and balancing all 4 only cost me another $40 so less than 1 tire new. If cost is a major factor that is what I would suggest ProComp or BFG AT from CL.

Petescj- I think you may be thinking of the Cooper Durrangos. I picked up a set of Cooper Durrangos for my wrangler once. They seemed to do me just fine, and they were very affordable considering some of the tires currently being mentioned. I too was in need of tires, and I couldn't quite afford paying 1000+ for tires. They were 33X12.50 Mud Terrains and I think I payed just under $600 all the way around. This is coming from a guy who still has thornbirds mounted on my CJ! So take it for what its worth!:D They were a little louder than the all terrains I had on before that, but with the top down, and music you could barely hear em!

So the Cooper Discoverer is an A/T, and the Durrango is a M/T ($120 per tire). I just did a search and Edjimicated myself. The Cooper XTR's had a recall, but I don't know when and why. I think if I had a choice of buying cheapy new tires, or buying good slightly used tires on Craigslist, I'd choose the better, slightly used ones. Guys are swapping to larger tires all the time, and looking to make a little back on they're old ones.

"Cheap" tires will get you in the long run... Gotta buy tires for the intended use! BFG AT's worked great for me for the 30K I had them on. Great highway speed manners in ANY condition, ok for the occasional mid-range difficulty offroad foray. A great DD tire that doesn't get the 10K howl a MT does... JMHO!

They sell Goodyear Wrangler Authorities at Walmart.
The tight thread makes for a fairly quiet tire.
They are a good price and are a sweet looking tire:

I needed tires the second I bought my CJ. I set a strict budget, but aso wanted high quality. Based on a magazine recommendation I went with the General Grabber AT 2's, and couldn't be happier with the choice at this point. The are comfortable and quiet on road with good manners. They are also studable and a good trail tire as well.

Bfg AT is what I have. I would suggest them to anyone! They are aggressive enough, and last forever.

I have had good luck with the Goodyear Wrangler Radials from WalMart
At $70 apiece, thats hard to beat.
