Dawn Of The DED?The Dirt Every Day Tours have spanned the globe for around 20 years. It’s when my buddies and I go and grab a derelict vehicle in a faraway place, patch it together, and drive it home—on dirt every day. I had been doing it for years prior to this magazine gig, and it has always been a fun ride. The first published flattie adventure was with David Freiburger in “The Adventure” (May ’98). While I was the editor of Jp magazine I did the great M-715 road test (Jp, July ’98) followed by “Jeeps of Route 66” (Jp, Apr. ’00) with my dad and his WWII jeep. After my dad passed away, Freiburger and I traveled from Phoenix to Alaska in Dad’s jeep, and I returned with Ned Bacon in the true Dawn of the DED adventure. As yet unpublished, this awesome 10,000-mile jaunt from Arizona to Fairbanks and back in 2000 was the trip of a lifetime. There were also other, smaller trips in the ’90s, with various vehicles, but after all of these trips Freiburger and I continued to make DED history throughout the last decade, starting with “The Flattie Adventure” (Apr. ’03).
