Sprayed PC Blaster on all the brake fittings. Then w/ time on my hands, I started snooping.

1. I have no dash,(panel), lights. When the light knob is pulled out, the only interior lites that work are the blue hi beam & driver's side green turn signal arrow in the speedometer.:(
2. Air knob pulls out, but nothing moves. There's a control cable that goes to the rite side of the heater box, behind the fresh air duct, that's not hooked up. When I move the rod that goes across the bottom of the windshield, the cable works. (the glove box is missing, that's how I can see it).
3. Temp knob won't pull out, unless I move the lever on the bottom of the heater by hand.
4. Where the he_ _ is the fuse box?:censored:

1) Have to wait until someone can find a wiring diagram. I can't find one yet... Also, are you sure all the bulbs are good? (don't laugh, I worked on a friends CJ for hours one time trying to figure out why the tail and stop lights didn't work just to find out all the bulbs were burnt out:) )

2) Sounds like the cable came off.

3) Sounds like the cable is frozen.

4) Right side of dash below the glove box. :) Looks like this.

My guess is the dash lights that do light up, are in the wrong sockets.
Pull one of them out and check the wire color. you are looking for a ORANGE color wire. If that isn't it, then find that color combination in the above diagram, and follow it to see where that lamp should be.

for a 1979 CJ, this is what I got for fuse box location...

Flasher
On your 1979 Jeep CJ5 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 2BL , the Flasher is located:

Front seating area, passenger side, under dash, below glove compartment, mounted in fuse panel

Application: Turn signal

We always say at work K.I.S.S. ! Keep It Simple Stupid. :) If you over complicate things, nothing gets done. Do like CJ said and check bulbs. If they are ok, start with each individual light and work on it until you get it figured out. Don't jump from one to the other, it will get over complicated. I always check each end for power, and then check midway in the circuit for power. If you have power at the midway point, move towards the bulb, no power, move towards the power supply. Check half way between and repeat until you find the problem.

:mad:Ok, the ACC LPS @ the bottom left of the fuse box is dead on both sides. Any ideas?
The htr fan is working & I got the cable back on the htr.

ACC LPS = accessory lamps.

If its dead on both sides it probably is a accessory circuit that was never used on that truck from the factory. see if you can pull it out and see if there is a power wire attached to the back.

Ahh... ACC LPS = accessory lamps

And did it even have a fuse in it to begin with?

Yes, it had a 3 amp fuse. I though it was accessory lights. Dash lights maybe? It's the 1st fuse in from the right on the bottom row.
Oh, CJ, the bulbs all appear to be good. I have to get a socket tomorrow to test them.

If it's dead on both ends - it's now time to start tracing the supply wire back to the source. Do you have a maint manual?

brock i was going to post some of those as i was reading until i got to your reply lol.

Thanks for all the great info guys. I was called i nto work @ 0130 this morning. I got in a 1985 Ford vacuum truck & had no dash lights. I rotated the dimmer switch & BAM, there was light. I got to thinking about the 5 & remembered those old vehicles had the same type light switch. unfortunately, I still have no panel lights. Looks like Saturday is going to be a busy day!

I'm assuming I should start trouble shooting the panel lights @ the light switch? I have a Haynes manual for the 5. Are there better manuals out there? Maybe the aMC Jeep service manuals I see on EvilBay?

The best manual is the factory one. Unfortunately finding an original is about impossible. The great thing is reprints are available. I'm not sure if Ebay has the same reprints or not but I know that this manual is a faithful reproduction. -->> Jeep Parts 1983-TSM-R 1983 Jeep Technical Service Manual Reprints

Yep, pick a light and work your way back... Only way to be 100% sure on the diagnosis.

Thanks CJ.
can anyone tell me how to remove the panel that has the speedo, etc in it? I've found several wires that have been cut behind the panel, & I need access to the fuel & water temp gauges.

Dash lights are fixed, all but the 2 in the gauges above the radio. It was the switch. THANKS Brock!!!!

I need to change out the dimmer switch. Does anyone know the size of the screws that mout the switch? I can't get a socket on them & the only other thing know to do is grind the heads off with a dremel. Then I might not be able to get the threaded parts out.:o
