I had gotten tired of the beverly hillbilly look my 8 takes on for our desert trips. One of my offroading buddies has a full size truck, and it's generally too big to take on most of our trips so he rides with me. We try and bring only what we need, but inevitably theres a pile of :dung: that has to be moved just to get to the ice chest. Another friend in our group is a fabricator, and he had a solution for some of my problem. First pic is the hillbilly before photo ;). We should have no problem getting to the ice chest now :chug:

nice job.:chug:

Is it attached to the roll bar in the back? Nice 8 as well.

Edit. I now see the bolts in the rollbar. I like the design.

Very nice, I like how you made it easy to remove when not needed.

SO, now you have to climb in the back to move the :dung: out of the way tp get to your ice chest. ...... I like the first picture best. Honestly after ownng a CJ5 it seems like you've got a TON of room.

I like the effort, looks good, maybe even top heavy and that makes it far more Jeep like right there. I'd like to work something like that up for my CJ5 . But with a hinge at the front so when it comes time to unload all I need to do is hings the whole thing forward and dump everything on the ground.... :)

That hinge is built right into the windshield. Just flop the ws forward and voila. Stuff on the ground in front of the Jeep.

I can see it now, unhitch a latch drive up step on the brake and instantly unload everything right there on the spot. ..... I know I'm having a little fun with this, honestly I think its a good solution to a storage problem. It's got me thinking about building a similar tray type storage but in the bed area. Kind of like a second story, I'm even seriously considering a hinge in the back, to tip the whole rack so it sort of stands up at the back. Then build in seperate storage areas, sort of like gym lockers. So imagine the rack standing at the rear of th Jeep, load up light but bulky items in the rack, when loaded use the winch to rotate it back up and lock it in position. Or you can skip the hinge, I'm seriously thinking about this, possibly a good solution to a CJ5 storage problem.

hole, is it steel with good paint cover, or aluminum?

It is out of steel, rattle can paint job for now. We're going to weld on some tabs for lights front and back, but I need to get the lights first (LED's) to know where to put tabs. After that I'll probably have it powder coated. I'm not sure about what gauge metal he used, but I can pick it up by myself without much difficulty and I can sit in it once its bolted down with no flex. I cant take any credit for its design, I only told him how big of basket I wanted and he took it from there. For the roll bar mount we drilled 3/4" holes through it and he welded two pieces of 3/4 bar stock that he machined 7/16" holes for the 3/8" mounting bolt.
It's main purpose will be to stow light things, duffle bags, sleeping bags, tents ect. At 6'4" I wont have too much trouble reaching stuff but a fold down option would be nice. I'll bring it up to him at the campfire next week :D

Ooh. I am picturing a hinge right above the bolts to the windshield and a hinge on each of the bars where they attach to the front of the basket. Done in such a way that you can bring the basket forward and down over the hood, yet keep the basket level. Once setting on (or just over the hood) you could reach the items or load it. Then pull it ip and back over the cab to lock it in place.

I like it! I need storage when 4 seats are full, and a top carrier for canoes and kayaks. No reason one such as you have can't do both!

I am actually beginning to take this hinge and basket thing setiously, only a shorter version for my CJ5 . Say a small one at shoulder height in the back that is slightly over center against the roll bar, locked with a tab. When needed open the tire carrierand lay it back to sit about tailgate high. ....naturally there won't be any rear seats.

Tracks with roller bearings like the baskets on my wife's dishwasher. Latched in place; release the latches to roll out for load/unload.

I love it. Wish I could do that. The Cj just barely clears the garage door now though. :(

Pete, might be time for a taller garage ;) Mine lives under a potable carport, metal poles and tarp. It seems that my tools for work take up 1/2 of the garage, and my wifes Grand Cherokee the other 1/2.
