Ok, so I replaced the motor mounts on my 85 CJ7 with some poly mounts. One thing that looked rather strange was there was a spacer sandwiched betweern the back of the motor mount and the 3 blt mount that attaches to the motor. At first i thought it was part of the old motor mount and it just seperated. After looking at it, it looks like it was some type of spacer put in place.

I snapped a photo of it for refrence. On right you will see the metal mount that bolts to the driverside of the engine block. On the left you will see the part in question. I reused the "spacer", but not sure if it is supposed to be there.

Also, I bought a 2nd set of used mount and brackets off ebay. This included the frame bracket, motor mount and engine bracket...... but both did not have this "spacer".

Any thought? Should I leave it.... or take it back out... Suggestions?

Should I place the motor mount directly on the mount that attaches to the block?

As always thanks,

Tony Marc

I just changed the motor mounts on my '81 CJ7 and did not have the spacers. They may have been put in for clearance/alignment issues by a PO. I like going back to original and then seeing what it needed. 30 years of added good intentions can lead to troubles but tread lightly, one thing does lead to another!

I'm doing my mounts on my 85 and Ive got spacers as well. Im going to reuse them because it doesnt look like a homemade fab job. Im def. curious to know why they are there though. they certainly dont help you get the oil pan out any easier. and they dont show up in the parts manual.

Just a simple guess, but they are probably there for alignment and fitment issues derived from manufacturing tolerances at the factory. We all know that were lax tolerances and many QC issues from back then. Just look at most of the welds on a normal frame.
If we took both of your frames and measured them very carefully, I'd think there was a minor difference in the distance between the frame sides, leading to needing the spacers on the wider frame.
Thats just a guess, tho.
