My 1975 Jeep CJ5 AMC 304 V8, has a Motorcraft 2100 or 2150 carb. I want to learn how to rebuild the carb, by purchasing another servicible 2100 from a junkyard, etc, buying a carb kit, and rebuilding it.

My question is this: can i purchase just ANY servicible 2100, and then purchase the correct carb kit for my application to make the carb suitable, OR, must i acquire a SPECIFIC 2100 model to rebuild along with the proper kit?

There basically all the same. The only real difference in them is the jets and Venturi. The Jets can be changed easily. The biggest problem is actually finding one in the junkyard anymore

Thank You for the response, ManicMechanic.

Yes, I suppose something that old, (and picked over for years) it could be difficult to find a servicible part.

As per the Jets and Venturi, are the "correct" ones provided in the RB kit? And, what would be a decent price for the rebuildable carb?

The Jets can be depending on the kit. The Venturi no. They are part of the carb. And typically if you have to replace them the carb is probably trash. Although they are sold separately. The ones you are looking for have the 1.08 Venturi. Found on the AMC 304 and the Ford 5.0 (like the 72 bronco)

This is where you need to look for the stamping for Venturi size

On a side note you can always ditch the carb for EFI

Great information, and very helpful. Thank You for it. I will limit my search to the 1.08 venturi size as suggested.

If you look at yours it should be stamped in the front side

Have you seen THIS DOCUMENT? It is much better than what is included in the kit. With these instructions I don't know why you would need a second carburetor.

No, but thanks to you I have now. It is minutely detailed (just what I need). Thank you muchly for the reference.

As per the "need" of another carb, you are right, another carb isnt needed. I was simply thinking that if the builder is cheap enough I could learn by rebuilding another unit, and then just swap out the carbs. In that manner perhaps avoid any extended downtime due to my vast inexperience.

If you ever need to rebuild it just keep a spare kit on hand as well as several bottles of good cleaner. I prefer a gallon though. Once you do one you'll find the next one will be less than than an hour.
Its a great carb.
