Does the ignition module need to be mounted to work? Does the case ground itself? Also, is there a reason not to mount the ignition module and starter solenoid to the firewall.

gm style ignition modules ground themselves through the base, not sure about the motcraft ones that were stock on our jeeps but it if it does it will get ground whereever you mount it. I wouldn't leave it just dangling.

they put those on the fender to keep them out of the way. I suppose you could put those on the firewall if you want they will function electronically the same regardless if they are installed on the firewall or mounted to the gas tank cross member. So long as they are wired correctly and grounded properly it named no never mind where they are mounted in theory.

I'd recommend the oem locations but if you want then ohm the firewall go for it.

:agree:what he said.

Well, to the best of my knowledge, the Motorcraft ignition module that comes with the later CJs, does not ground itself. It is grounded at the distributor thru the black wire from the module. It would be best to snip that wire at the distributor and run it directly to the battery ground, since the distributor doesn't need it. Originally it was located there for diagnostic use. You can install the module anywhere you want, but in a location where it would keep cool would be best.

Thanks. I was just thinking it might make the compartment "cleaner" looking by mounting some components on the firewall. I moved the solenoid below the battery but will just mount the module on the fender.
