Just became a Jeep owner for the first time. Over the years my dad and I always wanted a project to work on together as a father and son build. I think my dad has always wanted a Jeep, but did without (even in semi retirement) because he always puts family necessities first. We live across town from each other now. I have passed by this CJ every day for a over a year. At first I would see it parked in the previous owners garage when it was open. A few months ago, I noticed it had been rolled out into the driveway. When I had the means, I discussed it with my dad, and left a note on the Jeep inquiring if the owner might be interested in selling it. A few days later I got an email and checked it out the next day. The PO had installed a new battery that day. The inline 6 started right up, ran well, frame looks solid, a little bit of rust here and there but nothing to serious. Comes with full steel doors, hardtop, bikini top, and a 21 gallon polyethyline gas tank and sending unit still in the box. PO said he parked it a year ago after having trouble getting it into some of the gears. To make a long story short, we picked it up for $800, and trailered it home today. damn you got that jeep for $800 brother you done good, real good. just from the pics you already have a offenhauser intake, mc2100 carb, and the clifford valve cover everbody is looking for. you have the T-5 tranny which is why its going out, i'd say thats the only real down side to that jeep, but you can fix it pretty easy by swapping in a T-176 . its possible it could already have a 1 pc axle kit as well

Thanks guys. I'm new to CJs so I dont know a whole lot about them. After getting it home I decided to take it for a spin to see what I was in for. I was able to go from 1st through 4th but didnt go much faster since the brakes were dragging and the steering seemed a little off. I pulled off the air filter to check out the carb. Its sta mped "Motorcraft" on it but also has a sticker that says something like "Holley remanufactured" How much of a lift does it look like it has? Its on bald 31's right now but I may go bigger later. Also I noticed the camber is off on the front passenger wheel. Pic links below.

thank you. i'd say you can fit 32s just by looking at the pics. well its definately a motorcraft, evidently it was remaned by holley, and there where only two models of motorcraft 2bbl carbs that i know of one was a 2100 the other was a 2150, they look pretty close, but just by the pics it looks like a 2100.
 
Looking forward to starting off the build with my dad. It will be a while before it gets to the caliber of all of yours. I guess we will be starting things off by freshening all the fluids. Oil change, Transmission , Transfer Case , diffs, brake, power steering, coolant/antifreeze. From the research I've done, it looks like 70 gear oil for the non world class T-5 , but ATF for world class ones. I believe I have the Dana 300 , but I have seen different types of lube specified for these (80/90, etc.).

Can anyone set me straight on whats recommended for each of these fluids? Also, whats safe to use to clean all the gunk out of the cases and diffs???
 
Turtle71 you stoled that jeep. Even at $2000 all you could expect is a rust bucket or a jeep that won't hardly run. But you got it for $800 ! ? ! ? That's a steal!

Thanks, it seemed like a good deal to me too.:D Now I'm just trying to catch up to you guys.:notworthy: After fluids I'll be going over the brake system and then try to figure out whats wrong with the steering linkage thats caused it to get out of wack. I am very open to any advice that any of you veterans feel like giving.

I have the usual local stores for parts: Napa, Advance, Autozone, Oriellys. What have you guys found that has quality parts??? Online stores are an option too, but are there some that stand out among the rest?
 
u stole it ha:) i paid a grand for my 77 with hardly any frame and no body :( but trust me ull have a great time...
 
$800 for that jeep :eek: it would sell for 3 grand around here.

If you get rid of the lift schackles and go to something closer to stock lenght or half inch lift it will help with the steering.
