Build Thread My CJ-5 Build

Build Thread My CJ-5 Build
Yeah i was just reading a thread on the build a frame deals.. Think i may give it a hand to see if my plan will work..

Gunna remove one rail off my old frame. Lay it out on the garage floor (first house with a polished garage floor and i am loving it) and trace it on the floor with the wanted addition to the wheelbase.. Buy 2x4 tubing and cut pieces with drop saw to make the same pattern on floor (x2) giving me the rails, then measure wanted width and smoke together,, I was also going to add diamond shaped plates to each welded joint to spread load and keep from having a straight stress joint.. Figure with the 427 torque  it may need it.. But then again it will run propane (had the setup figured i would finally use it) so power may be a little low.. LOL

Looking at the 74 frame there is not width changes what so ever, straight rails, just "height" changes.. is this ok or should i make it wider beneath the body? Will my NP205 and SM465 fit between the rails? Anyone ever done this?

Thanks:notworthy:

If your down on power, mill the heads to bring your compression up a couple of points. Propane is 105 octane.;)

True... I just hate to tear down the engine, was built by a reputable shop back home in Illinois and i dont want to touch it.. They do good work.. If i touch it it will surely have problems..

What are your thoughts on the Tub issue.. If i could find a better tub for a '5 i would.. Just dont want a new one cause im going to trash it on the rocks, and dont want to cut the wheel wells open on a new one either.. This YJ tub is a little rough though.. floors, rockers and wheel houses are all rusty.. cutting off rockers for boat bottom sliders.. wheel housings are getting hacked up anyways, the length scares me though.. Want a '5 wheelbase plus about 3 inches, and want a short rear hangover.. Any ideas.. It seems that more of these threads go towards resto's and not trail rigs.. But the pirate guys are outa my league ..

I don't really think power is going to be a issue.;)

Help me here... You want to put a YJ tub on a CJ5 frame? You'd have 10+ inches of body hanging off! You would have to cut out 10" of body for it to fit... :)

And your thinking of building a new frame from scratch? I'd build a 7 frame, use the YJ tub and have a new CJ...

Am I getting this right?

Sounds like a great plan! :notworthy:

Yeah you are correct.. I am wanting to build a 7 frame.. more or less.. And the yj tub is way too long, knew that when i bought it.. But it is far less rusty than the tub that i cut off in the first photos on here.. needs floors and thats it.. I was wanting to bob the body and make a kind of 7 and 5 hybrid on the frame length.. Going to be an all around off road/ drive to work once in a blue moon type deal. Want something that screams off road thrashed and not mall crawler..

Have you looked at Kickinjeep's rig??
If I just had a large pile of rust, as you seem to, and were actually thinking about modifying the frame, I would think about the way he has gone. He has a truly bada*s looking rig.

Of course I think I am safe in saying that when the <-BAD WORD-> end of your jeep falls off, you pretty much have no place to go but up!!

I have followed this a while and hope I am not jumping in a bit to late.
So we need a frame that a YJ sits on and can put a tj suspension on and a CJ front clip correct?

Are there any YJ frames around?
Does the low rider guy doing the fab work for the suspension realize the difference in how a 4x4 suspension needs to work than a low rider suspension and the geometry needed to get it correct?
what width are the axles you want to use?
Maybe a frame from someone like this might work easier than trying to fab up one from scratch.

Changed the plan on the suspension.. Going with the KISS suspension.. Leafs, going to run YJ Springs on the thing, lowrider guy has moved on to be a desk jockey for an accounting firm and doesnt get dirty anymore.. I am really wanting to end up with what the guy in the link i posted above has.. but minus a little bit of the stretch.. So the steel that i can see me needing will cost around 175 add in some wire for the new welder and viola' you have a frame for a CJ.. 2x4 x3/16 tubing should be sufficient.. And by the way Kickinjeeps rig is awesome.. Im going to try and keep a little more of the rear sheetmetal though, i would like to be able to drive the thing to work just for grins.. I already have the tub.. The axles came out of an Internatioinal Scout.. so i think they are a little wider than waggy 44s.. Not sure though.. so far the whole project has made me money by selling all the junk i didnt want.. The drivetrain has been free up to this point but i need a set of springs from a YJ and dont want to drive 150miles to get them.. CL is kind of lame in the parts dept here.. :D

Anyone in So. or Central Indiana with a set of stock or low lift Yj springs can feel free to PM me with a price..

Sad to say but the Jeep Project is getting the big fat ax.. Times are getting tough at work.. Got too many irons in the fire and not enough time or money to finish them.. Going to be selling everything but my truck and el camino.. Transmission am is getting painted, assembled and sold too..

The project is for sale through next wednesday at which time it will go to jeep heaven or hell depending on how you look at it..

Axles windshield frame body tub fenders seats NP205/SM465 Big block engine. All of it.. stock jeep frame Im dying typing this but it has to be done.
Will buy another some day..

I'm sorry to here about your malaise.
Our illustrious leader say's the recession is over, but
I'd have to sell the Camino & keep the Jeep.;)

I have to agree, that chevy will sell and be built. one day you will find another, but the jeep will get crushed, and to many of them are leaving us, one day you will want one and they will be getting really rare.
Keep the jeep

The jeep was sold in pieces to a gentleman from Indianapolis. He used all the sheetmetal, as well as the engine and Transmission to build himself a CJ, so in the end it got the build it deserved..

One day i will find another jeep to play with, but for now the Transmission Am project is running away with me.. My truck just started getting a Turbocharger install, and the El Camino is getting a new dash cap right now.

As soon as the Transmission Am is done and sold a jeep will be going in..
