Here's a wild idea. I'm currently shopping for a new tub, and considering a new frame. I'm wondering if I got a narrow track CJ7 , if I could use the axles from my 75 CJ5 . Is the front sheet metal (fenders, hood, grill) the same between the two?

I'm pretty sure that in 76 they went to a frame that was not straight.. It widened out to the back. You may need to move the rear spring mounts on the axle. I can't help with the body parts.. I thought pre 76 5's were 3-4" shorter in the nose.

Narrow Track looks like and is build like wide track.

Narrow Track & Wide Track
The narrow track axles were used from '72 to '81. They had a width of 53 inches from wheel mating surface to wheel mating surface. In 1982 AMC changed the axles to “wide track” to make the CJ more stable. The wide track axles were 56 inches from WMS to WMS. The spring perch was always 27.5 inches apart.

Ok, so it looks like narrow track Dana 30 's were all 53" WMS to WMS. AMC20 's were the same. So it stands to reason that a narrow track Dana 44 would be the same or close.

Does anyone know what width springs a narrow track CJ7 uses?

As for sheet metal, AMC added 3" - 4" in 72 to allow the use of AMC I6's & V8's.

It seems the only issue may be relocating the spring perches on the 44.
