In a way, just trying to get this back to where the thread may actually help you. A portable player would also be able to be used elsewhere.
I have kids, but this is my youngest about an hour ago in the driveway.

About $100 at Wally-World will get you a decent portable DVD player, another $20 will get you a bag, the kind with the built in straps to go around a seat or center console. We bought one for my now six year old step-son a couple of years ago. Worth every single penny for the nine(ish) hour trips home to see family in PA.
