i have looked at this jeep for awhile and cant figure out a year i have i have number from the 4 cylinder motor number came from the boss above water pump 4j109884
this number is from side of block just above oil pan 806279 W-12 D AR
also the shackles dont look right to me are they factory or aftermarket
here are some pictures to help
trying to put this jeep back together and want to get right parts first time

i have already rebuilt a 1969 CJ5 just need help with this one no vin plate and cant find numbers on frame but everything on the jeep looks the same age
also the dash panel isnt one i have seen before if someone can enlighten me

iphone 088.webp

iphone 077.webp

iphone 076.webp

first picture, yep that is a factory shackle

we need a lot more info to give you a year on that jeep
what model is it?
how wide are the springs?
show me a picture of the windshield frame outside and inside
is the gas tank under the seat or in the rear?
are the pedals hung from the firewall or come through the floor?
what Transfer Case is in it?
is the rear axle pumpkin centered or off set?
is the front axle closed knuckled or open?

with that info I can make a guess and then ask for more info to get it closer

:chug:

It's a CJ5
Has tank under seat
Pedals come Through floor
Front axle is closed knuckle
The rest a will
Have to get this evening when I get home from work
What don't need to do to see if I have the hurricane 4 cylinder motor???
The Transmission is a T-90

so far it is a 67 or earlier

they used the Hurricane engine in all cj5s from 55 to 71 except the ones that had the V6
so that is a Hurricane plus that 4j on the water pump boss is the designation for a hurricane engine

the windshield, the passenger side of the hood, the drivers front fender, get pics of those
is the front axle a D25 or d27, that would narrow things down ,if you can find a serial number we are looking to see if it is 57548 or higher
besides that you can tell by how many bolts hold the ring gear to the carrier, 8 or ten, you would have to have 2 of them side by side to see the 27 has a heavier center section, finding the axle will get us into the 55 to 59 or 60 to 67
so we can get it 55 to 60, 60 to 65, or 65 to 67.
now if you pull the body and find the serial number on the frame, passengers side, then we can date it to the month

The Willys tail gate will be a clue, That went away around 62?.
The T case should be an dana/Spicer 18
The stickers are aftermarket.

ok, you have a CJ5 built between 1955 and November 0f 1960

that is getting us close considering that the clues are all over 51 years old.

getting closer that that is really going to take some investigation and I do not think it will be worth the effort

except. look on the frame, on the passenger rail, either above the rear axle or above the rear spring hanger for the front springs there should be a number, that is the serial number we can date it to a year with

that may take a bit of work to get that number visable

but you are in luck for parts, not to many changes were done till 1960 that I know of.

part of the problem is Willys kept lousy records. the other is we have had 4 other owners of jeep since then.
If you find the Serial number on the frame we can rebuild the VIN number so you can get it registered under the original numbers, we just need to know the serial number.

I would suggest you try and locate NOS parts if you are after a resto. The Omix :dung: for these is just that, many NOS parts are still available with some effort and one good source is the willystech board.

Crown makes good parts also

are you going for totally original or a resto restore?

is it safe to say the jeep has been restored before
the brake lines look brand new and the paint on the frame looks good (a few chips in paint and very solid frame))
the tub is in excellent shape (very minimal surface rust on underneath)
do u think i need to sand down to bare metal on frame to see numbers???
also if i cant find any other info what year shoud i order for somewhere between 55-59

is there anything else i can get for you guys to help me determine year

Parts in most cases if not all will not matter in that range. Not to steer you away but good info to had at the earlycj5 site and the willystech I mentioned. If you are going back to original? I have 2 of the correct wheels for it.

as fun as going back to oem would be i dont think we will (as much as everyone on here especially old timers will say that oem is the only way)
in the past year we have bought 3 jeep for a total of $1500 and we are putting them all together to make two fully functional jeeps with as much original parts as possible only problem with that is it seems one of the jeeps we bought is a ??
vin plate is 8513-16709 on kaiser jeep corp tag

The very early CJ's like you have can be a lot of work to get were you want to be in modern terms and they are just plain cool as is but it's entirely your call. Am I that old? Not yet.:D

Old maybe not
I got my jeep together now I am working on my dads just want to be finished an to work with minimal problems
The only thing I don't like about this build is PO took everything apart so I ajve a box of rusted bolts parts missing (wich could be good since I can replace parts that wear with new parts now instead of later)

What years and why did the have left hand threads on lug nuts in passenger side
I cannot tell you that, plus I always put fresh lugs when I rebuild.
you can get new body mounting bolts in one master kit through Omix Ada
I usually do a resto restore, I upgrade a few items and have the axles, tranny, and tcase rebuilt, as long as the jeeps is in pieces, why not? but then that is expensive. Lucky I have a local jeep shop that gives flat rates on the old stuff, they love to see old CJs parked out front of their place as it draws crowds.
I will usually put better breaks on, the ones on old jeeps are really not breaks but are slow down devices.;)
I hope we got the Jeep close enough for you, I do not see a problem with parts as those years not much changed.
I was just wondering how you were going to register this thing with no numbers?

Working on the registration part
Where can I get the windshield glass
Glass should not be hard, it is flat so it should not be expensive
and luckily you have a easy windshield to date
CJ5s all had the same frame that had top mounted wipers, Just remember it is a one piece when you call, not a 2 piece, the rubber for the glass can be got at Morris 4x4
you have 2 motors to source however, yep both wipers had a motor
