I have a 1979 CJ7 with the straight 6, recently my uncle messed with my distributor cap and it's running a little rough. I'm wondering what the correct timing is for mine. I also have a ford ignition etc and wondering what my spark plug gap should be. This is my first 4x4 and would love all the help possible to learn.

Your timing should be at 6B and the spark plugs at 0.035

One thing I forgot to mention, he also messed with the idle speed etc. So should I just set it to 6B then mess with the fuel to make my acceleration smooth and correct?

Haha thank you, I wasn't home I was at work. He said he was helping me out.... Thank you guys.

Ok I got everything set correctly but for some reason it still wants to bog out on me when accelerating, it's idle is perfect and timing is steady. I don't know what to do?!

Josh, I know just enough to be dangerous, but I was taught that idle settings are mostly carb mixture screws. When you begin to run the machine, you get into vacuum advance, centrifugal weights of the distributor, and fuel-air mixture, things a bit more head-scratching but doable.

So forget your idle settings; you seem to have them nailed and idle doesn't affect running performance of the carb.

I'd say an a timing light would be helpful, and a lifetime investment.

My Jeep is a AMC 304 with an MC2100, but tuning principles are just that, basic principles. A good scrub of Internet search engine returns will find you some worthwhile info.

Try giving it a little more timing as long as you are not getting any pinging it is fine. With my stuff I try to give it as much as I can.

I have a timing light and everything runs great like I said and im at 6, I'm nervous messing with the carb but hey how else will I learn? Any tips on messing with it?

And when I mess with the timing things tended to run really rough so I didn't know what to do about that.

It runs rough when you give it a little more timing?

What do you mean when you say the timing is steady?

Did you mark the balancer and set it with a timing light?

If the factory says 6btdc, you can probably run 10btdc and be ok. Like another member mentioned, you want to run as much as you can without pinging.

It looks like you have some bigger tires on there so it might be running fine, but with bigger tires it may just bog a little until the rpms get up there.

Time it with the vacuum hose disconnected and plugged.

How about the accelerator pump? Is it givingagood shot gas when stomped?

A carb kit may be in order.

Well set to 10 BTDC and it's running like a champ now, thank you guys for the help!

good job figuring it out
