Mystery solved!
The OP sent me a pik of his Jeep, and It's a beautiful DJ model! No top verson and 2WD. Like CJ, when I heard "5 slat grille" I figured it was a DJ model, and here it is.

Beautiful! Kinda different description then what I thought but close... 'wipers are on top of windsheild' is what threw me...

Man that thing is in GREAT shape!!!

That got me off point a little as well, but thought about how many diferent DJ models were made, and maybe some were top mounted. The OP did tell me he had made a mistake about the top mounts. Not a Jeep you see evry day, but looks like a really clean example.

That is one nice looking jeep! I've been looking at a CJ7 for a while, but now I'm begining to think I should look for a DJ model. Since I won't be doing much off-roading, the 2WD would be fine for me. What could I expect to pay for a running version?

I have never even priced a DJ before but have seen a few for sale. Look on Craigslist for some ideas of what they are going for...

I received a few more pics of this nice DJ and made a gallery for BIG D...

I'll create the post too... :)

nice rig. i never knew they made a 2wd jeep. learn something new everyday.

I paid $400 for one once. Fun little rig. Most of them came with a Dana 44 rear, and factory Limited slip. We used mine to run around at the sandy beaches back in the PNW. worked good as a general run-around rig also.

OP: One thing you might look into is putting a 4 or 6" sill on that doorframe. there is some states/jurisdictions that require a sill on any door-less vehicle to keep things or people from sliding out of the truck at speed and causing an accident.

BTW, one of the Off-Road rags did a build-up of a DJ5 years ago. put a bunch of stuff on it, cut the top, converted it to 4wd, ect.
Last time I heard of it, it was pulling yard duty in one of the editor's ranch.

Me too. I had never heard of a 2wd jeep. That thing is cool. I obviously knew that there were postal jeeps but I just assumed they were 4wd. This is probably old news to many of you but I looked up the DJ online,

"The Jeep Dispatcher, or DJ, was a two-wheel-drive variant of the CJ series. Production started in 1955 by Kaiser, which became Kaiser-Jeep in 1963, and in 1970 American Motors (AMC) purchased Kaiser’s money-losing Jeep operations establishing AM General, a wholly owned subsidiary, that built this model through 1983."

Watch out - 2wd Jeeps were used by the thousand by the military... They might snipe you for that comment! :D

Tons of those little sukkers zippin around bases, haulin junk all over!

DJs are not the only 2wd drive Jeep made. there was thousands of CJ-10 model built for the military also. Mainly used to pull Aerospace ground equipment (AGE) around flightlines. Also used as a aircraft tug.

Dont diss the 2wd Jeeps. They have a purpose.

I've seen one with a 327 that would freaking haul.
There is a really nice one in the local JY near me with the motor and all.
Been thinking about snagging it.

That's great...a postal jeep screaming down the track. Definately not something you see everyday.
