1981 CJ-5
Hi all, I scoured the site and can't find any info for this. I've got a 1981 CJ5 with a straight-six AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , stock front and rear, no bells no whistles. I need to sell it. (Too many projects going at once) The engine runs (19K, rebuilt) but the rest is in rough shape.

I bought a new hood, windshield frame, and front fenders, did an engine tune up, but not much else. Right now, the hood, fenders, and everything else forward of the windshield is off but the motor itself. I've welded in new metal in the body tub where needed and it's pretty solid now. I chucked all the seats and frames. They were trashed.

Last time she was all together, she ran fine. The 4x4 works fine and tranny was fine. Gauges all worked, except speedo.

Bottom line: She still needs a frame off resto done. I picked her up for 200 bucks from a guy who owed me 300, so total price was 500. Just don't have the time, so I'm gonna sell it. What's a fair price to ask? I don't want to screw anyone over, and would rather give someone a great deal so they can end up with a cool toy when they're done that didn't break them.

Suggestions on what to ask for it? Thanks in advance!

Rebuilt AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l is worth more than 500 bucks for sure. especially if you can provide paper work to prove it

Maybe in PA.. I just sold one for $350.. Was asking $500. The buyer came by the shop, I started, let him play with the throttle, shut it off and pulled the plugs for him to see that they were all clean then did a compression check with him there 165-170 between all cylinders. Still talked me down to $350.

With out it running I'd pay no more then $250 for the motor.

Here's your 2 choices. Sell it whole or part it out. You wil make a lot more money by parting it out.

If the "new" body parts are truly new or old but rust free you can get (high end) $AMC 150 for the fenders, $100 for the hood and $100 for the wind shield frame. The tub depending on how well it's repaired can go from $100-$250. If your frame is solid and rust free there's another $100-250. Good steering column $75-$AMC 150 tail gate $50. Dash $50 axles 250 for the pair unless they are wide track or geared and locked. Grill $50, radiator $25-50. Transmission .. Never said what type $100. Transfer Case an fetch between $AMC 150 -300.. Being an 81 it should have the short output Dana 300 . Parting it out I'd say your looking at $1500-$2300

As a whole I wouldn't offer more then $1000 for it, probably closer to $750.

Oh forgot to add says 19k on the motor but the speedo is broke so really how do you know. And by no means am I saying any one is being untruthfull but mileage is some thing that you can never really count on or verify unless your willing to let some one pull a valve cover and oil pan. Even then you can verify the actually mileage but the sludge build up will give you an idea of how it was taken care of.

Post some pics of it.

Well either way 350, 500 doesnt matter if he sells it he will recoup some of his money. Id give 500 for a rebuilt motor with 19 k if I could hear it run and they had some paperwork to prove the rebuild. I admittedly skimmed the OP so I didnt see the 19k part.
