Need seal number and brand for Dana 44 rear axle

I got a '79 CJ7 with Dana 44s both front and rear. Upon 1st inspection after purchase, I found the driver's side rear wheel seal was leaking onto the brake shoes.

Pulling the axle proved easy, but removing the bad seal was tough and any number on the old seal was disfigured and unreadable.

Anyone out there know what seal brand and number I need for replacement? The local NAPA Jeep expert was left scratching his head as to what I needed.

Any help is appreciated.

The front axle should be a Dana 30 , unless somebody swapped it out.

I guess he didnt bother to tell you what they were from. My only suggestion is to buy a few different seals for vehicles that came with passenger side drop 44s, chevys, scouts, wagoneers, etc. You would think it being a Dana 44 the tube seals would be pretty much the same across the board

I see your in the PNW, can you still read the id numbers on the tube of the axle. All the dana's have them, but they are stamped in. Around here, if its more than a handful of years old, they get rusty fast, but your stuff is usually pretty clean for decades.

If you can get the numbers off the tube, getting the seal number should be no problem. Somewhere in this mess, I have the dana axle parts catalogs.

Otherwise, as the other poster suggested, just start looking at the obvious suspects for the right seal. Id start with IH scout.

Well my fellow Jeep enthusiasts, I found the answer to my Dana 44 seal question. The answer was a matter of hit and miss but, the proper seal is a National #13839
