Need some help with connecting a heater/defroster in my 76 CJ5

I wanted to see if anyone could help me out with how to wire my heater switch and and any other info you might have on the whole subject. The PO has just about everything in the CJ as of now (so I think) and I dont know how to wire up the switch to check it. I do have a CJ manual but have not been able to look at it too much to figure this out. I got the wiring diagram too and that just tells me the wire colors. I need some better pics and a little more understanding of how to do it. The Wiring under the dash is a bit of a rats nest and the wires that are not connect to anything are not labeled.

Let me know if anyone can help or lead me to a site that can help/show me how to do. Thanks.

Not sure what you are wanting to know exactly, but the power to the blower comes from the fuse block slot marked ac/heater. In the original wiring harness, there was a brown wire that went to the switch from the fuse block. Out of the switch came two wires that were red and orange, that are the hot wires going to the blower motor for the different speeds. Finally, there is a black wire that comes out of the motor that is hooked to ground.

I hope this is right, because it has been years since Ive been behind the panel of a CJ5 .....but, according to my old wiring diagram, its all good.

Here is the order: fuse block>>>>brown wire to input side of switch>>>>>orange and red wires out of switch>>>>>>both wires into the motor>>>>black wire out of motor to ground( I prefer a battery ground rather than a case ground)

That def does help with me understanding the wiring a lil better. I an no electricion so i dont normally mess with this stuff too much. I think my big issue now is i will more than likely need a blower motor. PO siad that he had everything there and it just needed wired and i have not really dug into it a whole lot so i didnt even check to see if the motor was there.

So i guess my next questions is, where can i find a blower motor for a 76 that is not over $50. Is there any type of upgrade for the 76? A lil fab work is not out of the question if needed. I want to get this looking almost like the original so i dont want some aftermarket blower, yet.

Or would it even be possible to try and find a heating unit from a later model to put into the 76.

The Chevy Blazer motor is a popular upgrade fits in the same hole with a little minor work & would be hard to tell it's not original..........Look on this site in: Misc. CJ Discussion..........there is a thread that takes you through it.

Thanks guys, I have seen the thread before i just have to find it again. I was able to take a quick look last night at my blower while i was working on the rear axles and it does install from the firewall side, so i am assuming the Blazer motor will work. As soon as i get the rear end done (hopefully this weekend) I will dig into that. I think all i need to do is connect the blower motor to the switch and the switch to the fuse block. I currently keep the jeep garaged so i dont have to worry too much about defrosting the windshield too much, just have to worry about when it rains and leaks into the jeep and the windshield starts to fog up. And being semi warm is always a plus, haha. I will let you know how it goes. You will be very happy with the Blazer blower motor upgrade, because even when it's working properly, the original Jeep blower doesn't even defrost the windshield well, much less actually keep you warm.

check out the pics below. i had my buddy look at this and he is unsure what it is for. again, i havent dug into anything yet but was just looking at it again last night for a few mins and dont know what this is. let me know if you have any ideas. thanks.

That should be where the resistor box (speed control) was located at one time.

Ok, so do i need the resistor. Iv look online and can only find the heater switch at Morris 4x4.com. They show nothing about a resistor. Or does the switch act as the resistor and i just wire the blower motor straight up to the switch?

The resistor is normally part of the switch.
