1984 CJ-8 scrambler. completely stock except for the parts that are missing due to rust. 4.2L I6
Hey fellow Jeepsters!
I had to buy a new speedometer for my 1984 scrambler. I installed it and a new cable also. First of all, the gauge is not accurate at all. Sometimes when I'm going 55 on the speedo, my real speed is 68 according to GPS. But sometimes when I'm going 55 on the speedo, I'm going 75 on GPS. The other problem is that the odometer rakes up nearly twice the actual miles I actually go. I thought a new speedometer gear would fix it up but there is no consistency in the error. Next, if the speedo is reading slower than I'm actually going, wouldn't that make the odometer read fewer miles than actually traveled?

I'll give it o try.
Thanks Alpha6

Since the speed varies when driving consistantly I would say your new speedo is the problem or the new cable is dragging.. Did you change anything else?

I would put on the old cable and sheath and see if you have the same problem. If you do it is most definately the speedo.

Now is when I need to be in a time warp , then I could travel back in time to before I threw the old cable away and keep it. LOL. They gave a cable that was a little to long (80") I think I need the 69" model so I will try that. If not then I"ll get the speedo replaced or convert to electric. Thanks CJ for taking the time to help me out!

There was one post the other day about a problem with a loose tranny that had me LOL. It was particularly funny because there was one outside my building downtown that day.
