I am new to this jeep thing and wondering if on my 1979 CJ5 with a 360 v8 and 3 speed if it is possible to just flip the axles to SOA instead of buying new leafs. I have SAS other pickups and that kinda thing so i know bout measuring and welding perches and what not. I just havent seen much on this forum or much else where so i guess its not advised. This jeep will be used for sand, mud, trails, and whatever else i come across would like any and all advice for this. I plan on running 33s maybe 35s not sure really. thanks for any help

Not a bad idea, a lot of people have done it, there is a good thread just a few posts down from this one . Btw any good places in the Lima area to go? I don't live that far away and were always looking for a new place.

going soa will get you around 5" of lift depending on the springs you use.
The biggest expence is the steering, you need to get flat top (high steer) knuckles and arms to do it right. You will also need some sort of rear spring anti warp bar.
Lift springs are cheaper so most people go that route.

Old dog has a good point. And I just found a set of "lift" springs in beaver creek oh. on Craig's list. it doesn't say how big or how much

I'm actually goin to school at Unoh Tinman22 I really don't know of many places around here I know the school has an off road course and what not. I'm originally from Michigan and there is alot of places to go and do. So going just lift springs is best and most affordable way to go. Tinman22 hit me up sometime I'm always down to meet new people

another question i have is can i get wider axles that will bolt up to the orignal locations or will i have to move perches

You can put widetrac axles from a 84-86 CJ in it they should bolt right up.

Most affordable, Yes.
The best way maybe not, if you go SOA with a flat yj spring you can still get 4-5" of lift and alot better ride and more flex. But alot more work and money

what mtnwhlr said, that is the only direct bolt on, anything else will require outboarding the front springs or narrowing the axle or maybe both.

How hard do you think your going to wheel it ?

For sure will see sand dunes, trails, and mud and little bit of rocks maybe I really don't plan on going really hard just a toy to run around with and what not.

That kit has been talked about in alot of different cj forums. Theres a lot of negitve and not much positive said about it. I bet if you google it you will get alot of hits.
There's a kit for sale in our for sale ads thats been there for a long time now. For Sale - Jeep CJ High Steer Kit Rocky Road- Brand NEW - Jeep-CJ Forums
IMO it's not that hard to do it right and weld the spring perches and get some high steer knuckles and arms.

The way I'm thinkin tho is if I'm gonna weld on perches and do all that work I would go full width axles so I guess for right now I could just keep SUA. What lift kit would you suggest also on that same website I seen a kit to switch from cj leafs to tj I believe would that be a good kit to get some more flex outta the jeep

Listing was for cj to tj? Or yj? I'm guessing yj. I did stock yj leaves soa and flex was ok but Limited by the shocks I'm currently in the process ( drinking beer and talking about it) of switching to ford towers and shocks I'll let ya know how much travel it allows when it's done.

Chevyguy, alot of people here have went to yj springs and liked them.

Tinman, IIRC I gained around 3" with the ford towers.

so i just picked up a set of yj springs now the question is the thicker pack is for the front or rear also we have a hill event at the school coming up the first weekend of april.

I don't know about yj springs but cj springs always have an extra spring in the rear pack.

AS Old Dog said the thicker pack goes in the rear.
