hello guys. Im pretty happy about finding this site. alot of good info on cjs. thanks to all that post. I have a question. Im looking to get a decent cj to fix up and enjoy. I was looking at one close to me and it looked promising. but at a $3000 price. its an 81 that started as a 4 bangger and they put in a amc I6 from a newer cj in it. the engine is slightly tilted.I sthis normal for a 4 to 6 conversion? I heard that the i6 doesn't fit in properly so they have to tilt it. Is this correct? it look s good and has had a Howell fuel-injection kit installed.they said that was pretty expensive. the jeep is at jeeps r us in laguna.but its not thier jeep. it belongs to someone else. my worry is that if its a good deal then I would think that larry the owner of jeeps r us would have just bought it from the owner. larry said with a couple grand it would be a 6-7 grand..im alittle sceptical here is the link of the jeep ..they fleebayed it and had a deadbeat bidder. I came in quickly and had dibs on it if it didnt sell on ebay. Jeep : CJ:eBay Motors (item 130351143701 end time Dec-14-09 13:15:20 PST)
and here is another jeep im looking at. its a 84 4 bangger with its original engine and 121,000 miles. the owner said it was very reliable and only wants like 900 more than the fleebay 81 with a non original motor. this is the other one im interested in. Picasa Web Albums - James - 1984 Jeep CJ-7 I think i like the blue one better. seems like more jeep for my money.. what do you guys think.??? any input would be appreciated. thanks again for such a great site. looking forward to be Cjing soon....

The Howell f.i. system runs about $1300 itself. The only reason I can think of that the I-6 would have to be tilted like that is to alighn it correctly with the 4 cyl. Transmission . This Im not sure on ,but I can do some research when I get home from work. Personally I wouldnt buy a 4cyl. outright. You'll want more power and then be thinking about a motor swap. $$ will add up. It wont be pretty. With so many Cjs already offering the I-6 in them Id have a hard time justifying buying a 4 cyl.

keep looking. 68 or newer, as few PO mods as possible. 6 or eight , avoid automatic and QuadraTrac , granny low 4 speed a plus max wheel size 33", no shackle lift. IMHO

It can be any color you want it to be.:D

What IO said, in your part of the country there should be alot to choose from. Don't be in a hurry. The fewer mods that were done with it the better. AND good luck.

If there is anyway to get a picture of the "tilted" engine, that would be helpful. It shoudln't be tilted unless they tried to reuse motor mounts or like what was said before, had to mate to somethign that wasn't in alingment, like the tranny, or tranny mount.

If they had an entire I-6 drivetrain, the should have been all set.

So, that said, get more pictures, look around... do some homework, just don't impulsively buy one because it looks good... the Howell is nice, but you can put one on if you want at a later time.

Welcome aboard.

thanks alot. yes when I looked in the engine one of the motor mounts (passenger side) was a u shaped mount and sat higher than the other side. I think it was to clear the carb.?? maybe.? have time and $ so no hurry but would like it sooner than later.:).. the 6er with the FI kit did not pass smog today.jeepsrus said its been sitting for year since they put on the howell kit and that now its leaking oil and that was causing it to fail the smog test.they said 500 bucks would do the trick. 99% sure. so i think i have a bit negotiation room. maybe offer 2000.and he fixes the smog issue... thanks for the help guys...:chug:

Im really thinking you should pass on this one and wait for something better to come up. Someone threw a Howell f.i. kit on it and then let it sit for a year? This is starting to sound like someone elses headache. Walk away in my opinion. Trust me I buy junk all the time so I know.

you never said it was an AMC l6 did you?:dunno:

I've done a lot of engine swaps & never heard of anyone having to tilt a AMC "6" to install it in a late model CJ. I would have to question that.;)

That isn't armor... that is diamond plate... usually put in place to cover up something that the owner doesn't want anyone to see... but sometimes for decoration... check it out and see if there is good metal under there... but it does look pretty nice!
