80 CJ7, 4.2 mod with 4.0 head,
I did a quick forum look and did not see this related,
I just received a new Juan tub for my CJ7 . It has a really nice primer coating and not a scratch anywhere. I noticed that this coating was not sprayed on, looks to be dipped or Ecoat. I did the lacquer thinner wipe test and the primer was not removed, just made it hazy.
After all the research of past concerns with the lousy primer, does anyone know if Juan has improved this primer used. I could not find anyone who has a newer tub from them. I would really like to know if I need to strip this primer or not before continuing my resto. It sure seems to me that this new primer could be Ecoat.

im in the market for a tub or swap..so can i ask you opinion on this tub? I have heard different things. I do know they posted on here trying to improve on the tubs/quality..so whats your opinion and would you mind posting some pics? Or link we to a tread if you have one. thanks
 
I would sand it down with 180 grit and spray it with a good epoxy primer.

No matter what the tube has on it now, you are going to paint it. Before doing that you need a good base.

I' m also curious on how this tub works for you. Mainly the whole you need to drip and how the body mounts line up. Please keep us posted.
 
No doubt it was 'elctro primed'. Good for protecting the metal while you're doing all the mock-up/pre-assembly work.

When you're done drillin', cuttin', grindin' on it: Use a good quality epoxy primer then start fillin' and sandin'. Prep is everything to a good final paint job.
 
I'm back, this site had some issue with new member login.
Dan, all new tubs come from Juan Philippines. Most all my research only found the problems of 10 years ago. With many improvements made, there is still a lot of fitting and missing holes to drill. Body mounts were not bad, biggest pain was fitting the heater. The cowl opening is off 3/8 inch and it is a royal 10 hour pain to fit. Since my post, I contacted my supplier and he assured me the tubs are now zinc dip treated and primed.

Hack- I got a gallon of epoxy primer for under bottom. How should I prep for it.
I'm not a body/paint guy. Barely a mechanical guy, although I did most of the 'engineering' and pre-assembly mocking up, before farming it out.

The shop that painted mine sanded the whole thing down, and started there. Like I posted it was a ton of work. Two guys probably close to 80 hours (total labor) getting it ready for color. Lot's of spot welds that needed filling. Along with a few unnecessary holes. The windshield frame was a real project. I had them pour POR-15 into the inside to coat it against rust. Made a real mess on their concrete (better theirs than mine...). The tailgate, grill, and fenders also needed a lot of work to get them right.

I had the bottom and inside sprayed with bedliner: Truck Bed Liners | Scorpion Coatings

That's the stuff the shop sprayed on. Looks good and appears to be really tough. It can also be tinted, which they did on the areas around the doors where your shoes/boots would hit.

Don't forget to use seam sealer on the various areas that need it.
 
Mtnwhlr - just scuff with 180 or completely down to bare metal?

You do not need to sand it down to bare metal all you want is a good base for the primer to stick to the more you can leave on the better.
 
Do you know what was used to seal the outside seam around cowl. I'm wondering if you use the same sealer used on hidden seams or something else.

You just want to use a good seam sealer. What you need is to find a autobody supply store and they can help you with everyting you need.
