Newb builds speaker boxes

I recently bought my CJ and it has a tall, narrow "saddle" box mounted behind the front seats. The stereo speakers and amp are attached to it and it provides some lockable storage. It think it was built to be used behind the rear seat in a CJ7 or 8. It will not allow the rear seat to be installed though and I purchased the Jeep so the wife, child and I could wheel together.

So the problem is: how to remove the box and retain the tunes? The head unit is mounted in a Tuffy center console and the amp is screwed to the face of the box. I can mount the amp on the back of the CC but the speakers need to be relocated altogether. The PO gave me a set of outdoor speakers in their own enclosures but I couldn't find a way to mount them that I didn't hate. I was reading here about amo cans being used as speaker boxes so I thought I'd give that a go.

My idea is to mount the speaker inside the box and still be able to use the remaining space for tools, parts etc.



They are cut out and ready for paint. Going to ruff 'em up and paint them flat black. They will be mounted on the top of the rear fender wells. More pics soon.

took them to my buddies powder coat shop and used his sandblast cabinet to strip em'. That's got the hell beat out of sand paper and elbow grease. More pics today after work.

Tuffy also makes a storage box that mounts on the rear fenders that lock and have speaker cut outs in them. That's what came with my jeep.

Tuffy boxes were my first choice, until I saw the price !

Got 'em finished up tonite. I think they look good and the tunes still sound o.k.

This my friend is a great idea! i was trying to decide where i would put the speakers and have room for my tools.. i was going to mount 6x9's under my seats but figured i cant store my tools with it.. i think im going to use this idea as well!

how does it sound while you are cruising around? With the wind? traffic? etc..

sorry for the delay....................the speakers sound o.k. and I say o.k. because they aren't great quality speakers. You can hear them at freeway (58 MPH)!
